Forums - Sony - Sony is “pleased” that Nintendo is releasing 3DS!!!

During a recent presentation on 3D technology, Sony’s Mick Hocking has revealed that the company’s very pleased Nintendo has decided to launch the 3DS.

With Sony itself being a supporter of 3D and with Nintendo doing likewise, Sony hopes it will help raise the technology’s profile.

“We are very pleased that Nintendo is launching in the field of 3D with its Nintendo 3DS, as this will give the general public a better understanding of 3D and thus democratizing this technology in some way,” said  Hocking.

“It’s certainly a good thing for our products, screens, and PlayStation 3 compatible 3D. ”

Sony used its E3 conference to promote 3D in a big way.

Big hitters such as Killzone 3 and Gran Turismo 5 will both support the tech at launch, and other titles will no doubt follow soon after, if not before.

Thanks, Gamekyo

I don't think Sony's that pleased by it. I'm sure they would have rather gotten a 3DS-like PSP out first and not merely been pleased with trying to piggyback Nintendo's 3D success into getting a slightly faster adoption rate on 3D TVs, 3D games, etc. This could potentially kill their handheld business. It could even set back glass wearing 3D if people are so settled into the 3DS and it's games/movies that they don't want to go back to wearing glasses for such ludicrous prices.

Well, they couldn't bad-mouth one thing if they wanted to.

If they went for the 3D, they'd be the biggest hypocrites known to mankind.

For the DS itself, well, they'd be shut up by how well its predecessor did.

For the games.... they couldn't say one thing about them.

I imagine he said that through closed teeth.

More like, Sony is pleading with Capcom even as we speak not to make a Monster Hunter for it.

Did someone really expect Sony (or any competitor) to say how they really feel about the 3DS?

I also wonder if "pleased" has some cultural signfincance -- like "interesting" in Minnesota means "crazy."

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

I agree, it's good to have other companies like Nintendo pushing 3D even if it is competing with their PSP. This helps Sony out in the Console department!

perhaps we can change "pleased" for "pissed"... lol

how nice of them, Sony has such a big heart

LoL, they should be crying instead, who would pay 1500 (if not more) Euro to by a 3D tv, just to play Sony's games or see Avatar?

they'll buy 3DS instead, at least that's what i'm doing!

don't mind my username, that was more than 10 years ago, I'm a different person now, amazing how people change ^_^

Of course they're going to say that. They're not going to say they feel threatened or anything. XD

More than likely Sony is pleased sorta. Sony is a bit oblivious to practicality though. Having the 3DS out even by a competitor gives a good example of 3D in every day life. The 3DS is a commercial product for Sony 3D gaming and PS3. Sony misses the practicality because well they often tend to for the sake of technology. 3d glasses not practical at home, 3d capable TV well not practical mass market any time soon.

However Sony isn't that stupid. 3DS will certainly push 3D at home penetration. It will probably take 15 or so years, but it may end up helping Sony in the long run. Though it will also likely just make Sony 3d glasses tech be considered a failure for the near future.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.
