to put it clearer and make everybody happy :

online =/= offline

NA =/= WW

just precise it in your post/title next time

My title was precisely what the topic is. Using google trends to gauge interest in Move, Kinect and 3DS. Do you want me to fit a whole paragraph of disclaimers (which were in my OP) into my title as well?

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

use qoutation marks to SPECIFY exactly using "nintendo 3DS" "XBOX kinect" and "playstation move" yielded the best results with the 3ds being WAY ahead and move being only slightly ahead of the kinect but with kinect having a higher overall

http://www.google.com/trends?q="nintendo 3DS","xbox Kinect","playstation move"&ctab=0&geo=all&date=mtd&sort=0

Here in Italy the television news spoke about the whole E3, it was the first time I think. But they said it in a stupid way, they said "no new consoles", specifing that the 3DS is a new model of DS (wrong information). Instead they gave a lot of space to Natal or Move, but all my friends are impressed way more by 3DS than those two devices combined.

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

just for info,

right now kinect appears as 2nd in the top 10 US hottest topics.

the other words "3ds, move" does not.

If you just search under 3DS and Kinect they're nearly equal

http://www.google.com/trends?q=3ds, kinect&ctab=0&geo=all&date=mtd&sort=0

It's not like other things with the name exist

When I do the search, using Nintendo 3DS to eliminate the modeling and other '3DS' products the results are 5x higher than kinects.

Adding Nintendo and Miscrosoft also eliminates searches for the terms kinect and 3ds on their own.

Also searching for just 3ds and kinect is reasonable as kinect searches increase on June 13th and 3DS searches jump on June 14th. There's clearly a baseline (for other 3dS products) that you can subtract from the total 3DS searches to get an estimate for the nintendo 3DS.

Kinect is all over the mainstream media at the moment, while 3DS has dominated on internet games forums, so I wanted to see if we can gauge real interest with rough tools like google trends. Results are quite interesting I think, that people are more interested by 3DS despite the fact that Kinect has gotten more TV exposure.

Note: I wanted to do straight comparisons without "Nintendo", "Microsoft" and "Sony", but that was unfair due to Kinect being a new word while 3DS and obviously Move have had other meanings. This solution isn't perfect but it's the fairest I could come up with.

Interesting, you say? 3DS was amazing. Kinect was booboo at E3. Of course 3DS has much more attention

Currently playing:

Unreal Tournament 3, Warhawk, Rock Band, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII, DMC2, then 3, and Radiata Stories

"Stop the presses// It's been a while but I'm back in session// And in the past time my flow's matured more than adolescence// It's time to learn a lesson// So get you pen and your pad out, listen close, and take heed to this blessing"

^But as has been pointed out, Kinect is getting all the media attention, so in that light, I think it is interesting.
