Forums - Sales - Google trends to gauge interest in 3DS, Kinect and Move

http://www.google.com/trends?q=nintendo+3ds,+microsoft+kinect&ctab=0&geo=all&date=mtd&sort=0

Kinect is all over the mainstream media at the moment, while 3DS has dominated on internet games forums, so I wanted to see if we can gauge real interest with rough tools like google trends. Results are quite interesting I think, that people are more interested by 3DS despite the fact that Kinect has gotten more TV exposure.

Note: I wanted to do straight comparisons without "Nintendo", "Microsoft" and "Sony", but that was unfair due to Kinect being a new word while 3DS and obviously Move have had other meanings. This solution isn't perfect but it's the fairest I could come up with.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

If you just search under 3DS and Kinect they're nearly equal

It's not like other things with the name exist

@Shorty dunno if your being sarcastic there but 3DS Max = a Modeling program ...

damn, links dont work. But what does this prove? It should be kinect vs move. But Kinect is a new word and move obviously is a common word. So I did Sony Move vs Microsoft KInect. Kinect won by a lot. But I cant post the link cause this software is buggy.

It doesn't prove anything, it just gauges interest (reflected by google searches) and compares that between 3DS, Kinect and Move, which were the three major hardware showings of E3.

When I do the search, using Nintendo 3DS to eliminate the modeling and other '3DS' products the results are 5x higher than kinects.

quick points underlying what is lacking in your post :

- Kinect was shown on TV, that is not the case of the Move or the 3DS

- when you use "online" tool such as google, it basically means you are focusing on America or the anglophone world (america/uk) where, we know, the 360 is more popular than the PS3 (install base). This biased your comparaison ...

to put it clearer and make everybody happy :

online =/= offline

NA =/= WW

just precise it in your post/title next time

Being shown on TV means it has had exposure, and the media are interested. It is not a reflection of public interest as TV news can often be out of touch. I acknowledged that Kinect has gotten more media exposure in my first post, but this is about gauging interest.

Google is the dominant search engine around the world, not just the anglophone world. It's not a perfectly statistically representative sample, but once again as I said in my OP, we are using rough tools. Fine tools are not at our disposal.
