I hate it how so many people jump up and assume that America would invade a country for its resources. I'm pretty sure it would be economically shaky for one thing. Apparently the USA has spent $280B so far in Afghanistan, if they were to 'appropriate' (which they won't) these resources they would have to occupy Afghanistan for a hell of a long time and the costs would almost certainly top the $900B which is the raw value of the materials.
Basically Obama will be happy about this because it gives the shaky Afghanistan government more chance to maintain itself without international presence.

Obama will be very happy, I'll give you that
i don't believe that they didn't already know about this, perhaps they didn't know the 1 trillion number but they knew about the huge amount of natural resources, as did the soviets. We've seen this happen many times where rich countries do this especialy in certain african nations and then end up selling them millions in equipment and buying the resources at rock bottom prices. I can only hope that this isn't the case this time, but i'm quite skeptical. This announcement comes just at a time when Americans are getting sick of the war and it's becoming one of the longest in US history.
