JRPG's aren't dead. And your datalog excuse is far from being fair. Mass Effect tells a ton of story through the logs themselves. Why suddenly that's a different standard for JRPG's?

I do agree though, that FFXIII relied way too much on cutscenes, but that's an inherent fault to FF itself, especially the post-SNES FF's and the appearance of FMV's.

But as a genre itself, JRPG's are far from dead. DS  JRPG catalog alone can pretty much put to shame every home console WRPG and JRPG combined (except maybe Demon's Souls and Lost Odyssey).

I honestly can't fully agree with DS vs the home console ones simply because I had an amazing time with Folklore, Demons' Souls, Resonance of Fate, WKC and Valkyria Chronicles as far as current gen goes. Kingdom Hearts on DS was fun but I did force myself to finish it. Fire Emblem was ok. Surprisingly I had a good time with Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume though. I can't stand the pokemon series as I am no long 9 or 10 years old (actually even my 10 yr old nephew can't stand pokemon either). ME series (although not my cup of tea) puts just about every DS rpg to shame, as well as Fallout3.

Now if you want to bring out DS vs other generations (remember you didn't specify DS vs what gen), Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 alone blow the entire DS rpg catalog out the water (unless you hate the fast paced wonderful battle system), but then I can go further into xenogears, or legend of legaia, or grandia 2, hell even BoF: Dragon Quarter.

I also don't see a fault of including some FMV's and stuff in the FF series as long as it's not overdone. I did enjoy them in FFVII, and I enjoyed them also on FFVIII (one of the sickest intro's to date), they both had solid gameplay to back it up, and that cool amazing stuff that people wanted to do was done via limit breaks (Zell's stuff was memorable, and I still think that Squall's Lionheart > Omnislash).

DS has a fairly solid library of rpgs, and it's true that this gen has been fairly lackluster vs previous gens, but there are several rpgs that surpass anything the DS has to offer.

On a side note, I'm really really looking forward to the 3DS and the JRPGs that will be on that system, we'll see how much power it has during E3, it might just change everything.

Around the Network

please lest do NOT talk to me about a PSP right now (i lost my psp 3000 and it had valkyrie profile:lenneth in it).....it's somewhat of a tragic topic for me.

Back on the DS rpg's, I have played most of them....although not my DS....I hate to admit it has the R4 so ummmm...you know what that means. And yes I do swear on my grandmother's grave it is not my DS nor have I had any involvement in hacking, pirating, etc. I did however want to see what it had to offer and I wasn't compelled to get it. I did buy a PSP3000 for VP1 alone. Then I ended up getting Castlevania: SOTN on PSN, then FFVII, then bought rengoku, etc, etc. Now I have to save up for it again. I guess when it comes to tastes to each his/her own. I am curious about the SMT game on DS. As for FFIII I wouldn't call it a DS game really. It's like me saying "well by that account PS3 destroys the DS because on it I get Vagrant Story, FFVII, FFVIII, Xenogears, Suikoden, Grandia, etc." But in the end I guess since you bring out the fact that there is a vast quantity of rpgs on the DS then I cannot argue with you on that one. In the end I'd rather play 2-3 great rpgs than 10 mediocre ones (after the second pokemon it just got stupid to me and I apologize for not having the stomache for that series anymore). I say as far as replay value, Valkyrie Profile series has been good for that and more recently Resonance of Fate (currently my people are only lvl 80's when I beat the game, went to try out Neverland in NG at the beginning and got my ass handed to me).

P.S. If you play Demons' Souls still please let me know what level you are, I'm in NG and wouldn't mind a partner. I play a magician but I have been putting alot into hps and sta to survive onslaughts better. My character's in the 90's I believe.

Make games, not war (that goes for ridiculous fanboys)

I may be the next Maelstorm or not, you be the judge http://videogamesgrow.blogspot.com/  hopefully I can be more of an asset than a fanboy to VGC hehe.

Sorry about your PSP. I lost mine a few years ago, so I know what you must feel right now

I know that the library tastes depend on each one's perception. I just think that there's plenty of good offering all around, especially on handhelds. That's why I personally do not accept that "unless it's on home consoles, it doesnt count" mentality that sometimes arises here on the forum, like the one in the OP.

I agree that there's ton of quality on home consoles as well. Heck, Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon are probably amongst my favourite JRPG's this gen alone. But public perception of JRPG's this gen isn't quite the best one, unfortunately.

As for Demon's Souls, my current character is at Soul Level 253, as I'm on NG (fourth playthrough) as I had just finished my Platinum run with it.

What's your Magician setup (Gears and stats)? I have tried a pure Magician character, but until you get the Insanity Catalyst and Old Monk Wrappings, I had to rely a lot on Crescent Falchion 5 to survive (Or Moon War Scythe 5; this weapon is amazing for PvP, especially if you have high Magic stat).
