OK, so it's not much of a record, but it's a record none-the-less.
With only 3 weekends of release Prince of Persia is now the highest grossing VG adaptation movie in the foreign box offie (i.e. every country other than USA). This from Box Office Mojo:
"Prince of Persia was down 39 percent to $37.6 million in its second weekend for a foreign total of $156.4 million. This now stands as the highest foreign gross ever for a video game adaptation, passing Lara Croft: Tomb Raider's $143.5 million. While Persia did not have any substantial new openings, it did see solid second weekend performances in Russia ($5.5 million), China ($4.4 million), Brazil ($3.6 million), France ($3 million), Mexico ($2.6 million), South Korea ($2.4 million) and Australia ($1.6 million)."
Looking like a good chance to also beat Tomb Raider for the WW highest grossing VG adaptation ever, needing only another $58 million to cross that mark. It suffered a big 53% 2nd weekend drop in the US, so it looks like it really isn't going to catch on in the States like it has the rest of the world.
I'm pretty sure that if it gets close to $300 million at the box office then with the DVD sales and rentals this will guarantee the movie will be profitable for Disney, which means a likely sequel. Audiences are definitely liking it much more than the pompous critics that seem to automatically mark movies down for being VG adaptations.
I wonder if anyone has done a meta-analysis to see what fares the best / worst with critics: VG-->movie adaptations or movie -->VG adaptations.
