Because it's the limit at 10 inches or so from the eyes, you can hold it closer than that and see the pixels.

OT: The iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad are all gaming platforms. What's interesting is that Nintendo went down the 'app' route before Apple did and probably didn't even realize it. Brain Age and Wii Fit are more app than game and they sold huge amounts of systems. Apple also paved the way for a digital distribution model which will be seen and can already be seen in the handheld gaming market.

I'm unsure what Sony are going to do to differentiate themselves from the iOS devices but with Nintendo it's pretty clear that the dual screen aspect along with 3D (which I think we'll see in the iPhone in 2012 so it'll be a big advantage for long enough) and Nintendo's intellectual properties will ensure 3DS will continue Nintendo's volume of sales and market share in the dedicated portable gaming category.

E3 is around the corner, so we'll be able to decipher Nintendo's market strategy next week and see just how much of a competitor Nintendo sees Apple.

Interesting times indeed...

It's definitely a little over the top, even for pixel and typography fetishists.

The real reason why Apple didn't stop at 300 and call it a day is because it's a tidy double the resolution of previous iPhones. That brings advantages in making apps compatible between old and new iPhone screens.
