Forums - General - What to follow? My dreams? Or the money?

Hey guys, so i am starting college soon and i really wanted your opinions on what major i should take. On the one hand, i am really good at 3d modeling and animating (game design). On the other hand, computer science almost guarantees a secure job and a steady income. Game designers start out with low pay, and chances are, that it is going to rely on luck on whether or not i get a job or not in that field because it is so damn competitive.

Computer Science is also competitive of course, but companies are always looking for software engineers, and other branches of the sort. I really love Game Design, but i would easily give it up because i know what is important, and that is that i need the green stuff. Plus, i don't hate Computer Science, but i def. love game design way more.

I think you should follow your dreams, I am, Nice timing I just started a job...Kinda...Today, I have to draw for a childrens' book, But I don't want to screw up, And I'm not getting paid much because there are two artists, and I'm 14...LOLS

Dreams= Happiness

Money= Somewhere, but lost!

^^ Yep, I agree... follow your dreams. If you do, then over time you'll eventually be rewards with large wads of cash anyway :P .

Just make sure you don't deny yourself of what you love to do the most :D.

Oh and when you've done some awesome 3D modelling/ animation pieces, make sure to show us ^_^ .

Have dreams that also make you tons of money.

But seriously I can't really say, what I enjoy also makes tons of money. I guess dreams since it's much better doing things I like and I'd hate dodng thing I don't want to do.

If your dream is to work with design then you should follow it. Just work your ass off to create stuff to put in your portfolio, create a website (if you haven't already) and show the world your creations. If you know how to program games then make some smaller games, or team up with someone with programming skills and do some projects together. Participate in game design challenges! If you really put your soul into it it will work out eventually!

I would just follow the money, but that's just me.

As a computer sientist (is that a word), you can't program unless you like it. You would actually be a huge detriment to whoever you are working with because you will consistently turn out half-assed code that will be retarded to debug, upkeep, and update. I have seen it hundreds of times, and people who do not enjoy programming turn out some of the mot ridiculous code I have ever seen. So for the sake of anyone you will ever work with, or whoever will have to fix your code, or really has anything to do with your code, don't go into CS. I am tired of having to fix the mistakes of people who can't give enough of a damn to code well.

Follow your dreams dude- take it from me. I'm in SVA (School of Visual Arts) in NYC taking cartooning. Basically, I'm trying to become a comic book artist. It's not a job that gets a lot of money, in fact, you don't make much, and it's extremely hard of a field to make it in, but goddamn I actually love what I'm doing, and after experiencing this, I realized how much I would absolutely hate doing anything else in college and with my life. Follow your dreams, it'll be worth it. Besides, if you're doing 3D animation or something like that, that's a field that actually makes money (well, more than most other artists.) If you have any questions about art college or computer art in general feel free to ask :)
