Forums - Gaming - Graphic Whores forgot what gaming really is about

Graphics has always been a pissing match. I remember reading gaming mags in the 80s and they always fawned over graphics, ranting about how awesome some Speccy game graphics were or how amazing the new hot consoles from Japan were.

Honestly, the limitations of systems forces developers to be imaginative and stylistic about their designs. I can look at an 80s system now and still be impressed by the graphics, purely based on the stylism and delivery, a hallmark of the current demo scenes.

What are we aiming for, photorealism? How boring.

I have come to the conclusion that the only people that bitch and whine about graphics are newbies to gaming

Im so sick and tired of all the...if the graphics arent top notch than the game is crap  b.s. that seems to plague these simple minded minds on these boards....What ever happened to just playing the games and having fun??

Dont you guys realize This state of mind is whats killing the game industry??

Graphics arent everything people,Seems like The only ones to really realize this are the Wii faithful ..

so why cant ps3 & 360 users also??

I swear I for one have been gaming for years and this current generation of gamers are the most annoying...shit

Very true

Wow, Wii owners arent real gamers because the games on the Wii have worse graphics.
Its just like you said, its all part of the console war, PS3 owners and X360 owners say there games have great graphics, Wii users dont because they cant.

I'd much rather a game with Uncharted 2 graphics with good game-play, then a game with last generation graphics and good game-play.

Smart Men answer questions, Wise men ask questions.
Gamers play games, True Gamers support Gaming

cause we are in HD gen now

those without great idea developers can only use graphic to attract gamers

do you think so many developers can have so much fresh gameplay idea?

if so i think all ideas will be use out by now

and it's when gaming will reach it's dooms day

you want that?

video games.  They aren't just games.  It's not like someone playing with a cheep deck of cards compraired to someone playing with cards that are covered in gold.  The cards would look prettier but that has no effect on any of the games you play. Yet some people would like having those gold cards and would enjoy them.  I'd find it a waste but that's me.

This aplies to video games as well.  Some games don't need to look really pretty to be good games.  Many puzzle games don't really need to much.  Break out or tetris don't need to have super graphics to be good games. However some games the graphics and visuals add more to imersion.  When people look more real you can relate to them more.   Scary games wouldn't be that scary in 16 bits.  Yes with graphics they sometimes show too much these days, but that's them just not remembering what you don't see is often more scary than what you do see.

I would have prefered better graphics on some games because it makes it easier to distinguish things.  When i played little kings story it got a little anying when my people would start to look the same.  So graphics can also help with clarity.

Lets not forget that the 360 and Ps3 don't just have better ghraphic capabilities.  They are also ablo to collculate much more and faster.  Allowing more things to go on with phisics and better AI two other things that can help a game be better.

That or people who say graphics don't matter at all are accepting mediocrity. Look at Uncharted 2, It has (arguably) the best graphics this gen and its also (arguably) one of the best games overall this gen. Just because a game looks amazing doesn't mean its bad.

Works both ways...

I find that people who just stare at the pretty visuals on the screen and are contempt with pushing square everyonce in a while when the screen says so are accepting mediocrity as well.

Uncharted 2 is a great game, and not just the visuals...but there re many games which go off on a visual tantrum and really provide very little control or gameplay involvement.

The problem the industry is finding itself in is that with the "visuals first" approach, the product quality starts to be proportional with the $$$ invested with production and not gameplay ideas involved.

Well yeah I agree a game can't just be visually nice and have no gameplay, but its certainly possible to have both.

They aren't wii faithful because of the graphics, they are wii faithful because nintendo made the wii

graphics are the last thing that comes to mind when i look at game. Those that put graphics above anyhting else have no right to call themselves gamers

I'll say this: Gameplay is and will always be king- but Nintendo has made great games this gen in spite of (not because of) the Wii's capabilities.  Zelda, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Other M, etc. are great games.  So are Wii Sports, Mario Kart, and NSMB Wii.  But better graphics would do nothing but help those first few games.  Immersion would be better.  You'd feel like you were in those dungeons, facing alien murderers, or in some crazy fantasy world.  As it stands, it just feels like you're playing a great game.

The debate of Graphics Vs Gameplay has me tired and bored.

It's a matter of perception.

Graphics have the power of impression. Visuals are an easy mechanism to attract people. Even I am impressed of the visual quality many games for PC and HD consoles have. On this we can all agree. Graphics are hype makers.

The discussion is and will always be : do great graphics indicate a great game? Graphic whores would go for the YES and the gameplay purist will go to the NO. In reality the answer is not, and never will be, objective.

  • There are great games with amazing graphics : Modern Warfare, God of War, Resident Evil 4, Super Mario Galaxy, etc.
  • There are bad games with great graphics : Lair, some Me-Too FPS, etc.
  • There are bad games with low res visuals : Wii shovelware
  • There are great games with low res visuals: Dragon Quest IX, NSMB wii, Scribblenauts, many DS games.

I consider stupid when a gamers does not want to try a game because of the visuals. A good or bad game is defined by your experience with it or by checking if the gameplay elements are of your appeal before you try.
