@Kyros:

Yeah its selling 30K in December, not a good sign, it'll drop back into the teens in janurary, then what, its got only a few games to keep it going in 2008, which mean occaisional spikes but not sustained sales. Wii on the ohter hand has the games that japan seems to love.

Wii doesn't need those tirles, you really think DMC, or MGS4 will light up sales for more than a week or two, in japan, when the other games in the series on PS2 didn't? We aren't talking about Wii fit, here, these games aren't as earthshattering as people seem to believe. FF13 is pretty much the only game that PS3 can count on, and that's a long ways off.

Not really PS3 has only a couple of big exclusives in 2008, it won't tip the balance against the 360 in NA, Price still plays into 360's hands, especially since Blu-ray isn't an issue for most consumers

Yeah a PS3 or a 360, not any one in particular, which is why it helps the Wii, Wii gets all of its pie, while PS3 and 360 fight over the same pie, hence the red ocean VS. the blue ocean

Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!!  Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

It's very simple guys:

- the PS3 is not competing against the Wii
- HD-DVD/Blu-Ray aren't competing against DVD

Why? Because they're losing. If they start winning, the naysayers will finally start trumpeting victory (which implies competition).

on the contrary
i think the direction nintendo has taken gaming entertainment, is a direction to stay and will develop itself much further

''Hadouken!''

ooooooh
now i understand some of you guys
because i say that the ps3 is not competing directly with the wii
you think i'm biased towards sony
but if you think that, then you are confusing me with some other kids on vgchartz is guess

the discussion was about direct competion, not just competion as you write
because of course there is 'competition' between everyone

''Hadouken!''

well what i just said about the ps3, also applies to the 360 in my opion

a lot of people are saying that it's only being boosted because of a price cut. Well, sure, it was droped to $399, but did you also take into consideration that $399 is a much more attractive price point? The 360 sold wonderfully worldwide, at $399 (not including Japan, since they hate the 360) but still, $400 is a point that a LOT more people are willing to pay for, and then add the Sony brand loyalty, and that results in a CONSTANT stream of sales.....it's still selling well half way into December

I mean, a lot have said that the Japanese are just liking the new SKU and it will wear off......if Sony made a new SKU at $249, and sales increased, would you say that it was "because of a price cut and a new SKU, sales will go back down" or would you realize that the only thing holding PS3 back is the price?

All of those posts were made during the 2-3 week period were the PS3 actually outsold the Wii in Japan. Obviously history has proven them correct. I do agree with your point though. $400 seems to be one of the breaking points for consoles and should help the PS3 tremendously next year. It will drop down considerably after the holidays of course, but so will everything else. I expect it to continue to sell at about the same rate as the 360 until some of the big name titles that are worth anything comes out. After that I am unsure. I do look forward to Killzone 2 flopping though.

Sorry, I can't help but make fun of that game because it is so over-hyped and put in the same league as the PS3s true blockbuster titles.

A couple of big exclusives? lol Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Killzone2, MGS4, Little Big Planet. As dominating as the 360 was 2007 game-wise, this has completely reversed. So lets wait and see. See it this way. 2007 the 360 had Bioshock, Mass Effects, Forza2 and Halo3 and it didn't manage to outsell the PS3 decisively worldwide? I would be really surprised if the PS3 doesn't outsell the 360 by a good margin 2008 worldwide.

"Yeah a PS3 or a 360, not any one in particular, which is why it helps the Wii, Wii gets all of its pie, while PS3 and 360 fight over the same pie, hence the red ocean VS. the blue ocean"

A littlebit confusing. But yes the Wii and the PS3/360 have completely different gaming libraries. The Wii is pretty much Nintendo only. The PS3/360 have the rest. At the moment Nintendo is doing the impossible and beating the rest. But I do not know if they can continue to do so.

This topic was started by a.l.e.x59 in the wake of the PS3's two weeks of success outselling the Wii in Japan. Make no mistake, that was a very nice achievement that Sony can be proud about. Unfortunately, however, it was only a temporary blip in the overal trend of sales data. The PS3 and Wii have now been on the market together in Japan for 58 weeks... and the Wii has sold more units in 56 of them (often by a VERY large margin). That's pretty clear-cut.

The PS3 isn't going to dominate the Wii. How anyone can possibly think this is beyond me. This has nothing to do with ideology; we've got 14 months of sales data accumulated now since the systems launched alongside one another. The Wii has consistently outsold the PS3, at all times, in all regions. It's almost TEN MILLION units ahead. The PS3 has NEVER outsold the Wii in America, in ANY week, EVER.

To deny this is to live in some sort of fanboyish dreamworld. It's just as silly as saying that the Gamecube would "dominate" the PS2; by December 2002, it was extremely obvious that would never happen. Five years later, it's just as clear that the PS3 will never dominate the Wii. Stop thinking in terms of ideology and just look at the sales data.
