No. This is the trap that people fell into when trying to predict sales for SMG and used NSMB as the reference. 2D Mario is a different genre than 3D Mario. You can can compare the two and come up with lots of similarities but at root of it all they are very different games that appeal to their own distinct crowd. The comparison between the two can give you indications and you might adduce some small a priori noema that will help engender further investigation. Straight up comparison such as looking at sales for NSMB and assigning that some predictive value for SMG sales is not relevant because they are two radically different games. |
The games are different but I don't think they're as different as you make them out to be. While some people may find that platforming was better in 2D and other people will say that 2D games are too simple, Mario has managed the transition between 2D and 3D well in that the games FEEL the same. Certainly they feel more similar than Sunshine. Of course, there are going to be some people who like one and not the other, but I don't think the difference is as big as you claim. I think in terms of gameplay SMG is closer to NSMB than it is to sunshine, for example. In terms of sales, I see the same thing, given the similarities in sales patterns between the DS and the Wii, which is completely different to that of the Gamecube.
Ideally, I would have compared the sales of SMG to that of Mario 64, unfortunately, Mario 64 was a launch game and launch games always have different sales patterns. In terms of sales, In the end I think NSMB is the best game to compare its sales trends to (note, sales trend, not sales numbers)
