Forums - Sales - About the sales of SMG, one thing to remember

Actually I would like say that Galaxy will be selling 10-15k weekly when Halo 4 is realesed! (which know will be about 2.5-3 years from now)

Theoretically, there won't be no Halo 4 (Trilogy remember?!)... Profit- and marketwise, that's another story ...

Btw: I guess ur right about how u think Mario Galaxy's legs will be... I was being conservative! I learned that from Nintendo ...

I will sell 10000000000000m

The best selling game of all time was super mario bros 3. (non pack in)

This game has started faster out of the gate than super mario bros 3 did on a much smaller install base

1. Mario is one of the few franchises that is loved by everyone, casual gamers and core gamers alike.

2. Even though the Wii user bases is now over Million larger than the Xbox360 it is safe to say that the core group is still 2-1 maybe 3-2 in favor of the X360-

3. Core gamers KNOW when release dates are and want the games ASAP

4. Casual Gamers don't usually know when games are coming out. They usually hear it by word of mouth or a commercial(of which N has been lacking) I was a casual gamer once, when I was a kid I had NO idea when stuff was coming out... unless that hyped it to death(Halo).

5. SMG will have amazing legs, look at NSMB for DS- many people are buying today because they just now got their DS, but have wanted it all along

All of that to say Mario is the kind of game you buy with or without hype- I remember playing SB3 on my cousin's NES about a year after it came out. That was the last straw for me I BEGGED my dad to get me a NES for my B-day and when we saw that they had a bundle pack he got it for me.

Also we need to remember that people who buy a Wii a year from now will want to have SMG in their library- It is Mario, the highest rated game EVER, and on an obsessivly popular system.

Lastly we need to remember that casual don't just walk into a store and spend 50 bucks on a game, they need to here people talking about how fun it is, and once word of mouth has made its rounds they may pick it up, if for anything because everyone is praising it.

Thats copied and pasted from a forum on here someqwhere else - i've read that EXCACT same list somwewhere

Those people that think they're perfect give a bad reputation to us who are...

"With the DS, it's fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen, but I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that." - Phil Harrison, Sony

I wouldn't be so sure about your claim there. Apart from in Japan, SMG launched way better than NSMB. The NSMB numbers in Europe and America are about 50% of the total sales, for a quite respectable 5 million sales. Remember that NSMB launched to a much bigger user base. I would say that Galaxy will outperform NSMB in America and Europe, and underperform in Japan. Overall, I expect the SMG sales to be lower than NSMB but not by much.

Halo 3 is looking like charting very similarly to Halo 2 (but slightly higher). With a larger overall 360 userbase than Xbox, Halo 3 should outperform Halo 2.

Remember that NSMB sold 11.33 million and is still selling quite strongly, while Halo 2 sold 8.39 million and is still charting but much weaker. I wouldn't call the battle between Halo 3 and SMG over quite yet...

I did not copy and paste this from anywhere the idea struch me when I remembered my childhood, and how long it took me to get games I wanted(now I can buy anytime I want).. combined with the fact that every kid wants a Wii and Mario is what they want. That is where I got that, don't assume plagarism, unless you can find it somewhere else.

Now I am sure someone, someplace might have had similiar ideas (they are not that revolutionary), so someone else may have made a similiar post but I did not copy anyone

add me, the more the merrier.

In my mind, the only limitation on the sales of Galaxy is Nintendo's ability to manufacture consoles for people to play Galaxy on.

From the day the Wii was launched, I have always felt that one demographic Nintendo can reach is the audience of former NES and SNES owners who will be tipped towards the Wii because of nostalgia and the Virtual Console -- today's retro gamers who miss the days of platformers and turn-based strategy before everything became MMO/RTS and FPS. This market is HUGE and will soak up Galaxy like a sponge. It'll be slow and methodical, like DS sales, where these gamers have also jumped due to the revival of TBS and 2D platformers that moved to Ninty's handheld.

Galaxy will not shift a lot of units in any single week, but I feel it will sell remarkably well every week for several years. Until Wii console supply catches up with demand, nobody has any idea how well any game on the Wii can sell, not Galaxy, not Wii Fit, not anything.

Comparing Halo 3's launch with Galaxy's is an apples/oranges comparison, as most everyone who anticipated Halo 3 already had a 360. Potential Galaxy purchasers are still searching their stores for Wii.

Galaxy's Week 1 sales indicated that 1-in-8 Wii owners bought it in the 5 day window of its release week. In many stores, it was supply constrained. It's continued sales since in comparison to the console have maintained that 1:8 ratio. Now, I've seen some ridiculous Wii lifetime sale predictions: 100M, 150M, and up. I'll be conservative and cut that in half ... say 70-80M Wii consoles sold through its entire lifecycle. That should be enough to push Galaxy to 10M.

A better comparison would be Super Mario Sunshine and not NSMB.

Fine, let's. Super Mario Sunshine - 5.91 million Gamecube - 21.59 million That's a 27.37% attachment rate. Now, let's assume a similar attachment rate for the Wii, per your suggestion. I won't even factor in the "#2 of all time on Gamerankings" boost. The vital question is: How much will the Wii sell over the console's lifetime? I think that a hopelessly conservative estimate would be 60 million -- nearly tying the lifetime sales of the NES. 27.37% of 60 million is 16.42 million, or somewhat less than SMB3 sold. Many people think that sales will end up similar to the PS1 or PS2. 27.37% of 102.49 million is 28.05 million. 27.37% of (let's say) 125 million is 34.21 million. Some people think that the Wii's lifetime sales will end up at closer to 150 million or even higher, but I think the point has been made. Comparing SMG to SMS yields an extrapolated prediction that SMG will beat Halo 3 with the greatest of ease and move (at least) into the top ten all-time best seller list. But I bet that's not the comparison you were thinking of ... was it?

Just for fun -- here are the sales numbers (in millions) and attachment rates for Super Mario "main series" titles and the consoles they sold on.

NSMB is not counted because its sales numbers have not finalized, and neither have the DS's.

*SMB - 40.23
SMB3 - 17.28
NES - 61.79
17.28 / 61.79 = 27.97%

*SMW - 20.61
SNES - 49.08

SM64 - 11.89
N64 - 32.93
11.89 / 32.93 = 36.11%

SMS - 5.91
GCN - 21.59
5.91 / 21.59 = 27.37%

* These games were bundled with the console at launch and these bundles account for a significant portion of the game's total sales.
