It means Northerner.  The term Yankee was used by the South to differentiate themselves from the North during the Civil War... and often still used to this day to highlight the cultural differences between the North and the South.


It's the equivlent of calling someone from England or Northern Ireland "Scottish".

Well except a lot of the South still dislikes the North quite a bit.

Ok, but for anyone born in America like me, saying American as a demonym for USA is also insulting towards the rest of the continent, what other word is there? Usaian?

You call Soccer Football...  right?  What's the difference?

Assosiation Football is just one sport in the football grouping.   It's the same with the USA... except from the fact there is no "American" grouping and only North American and South American.

By your own standards calling Soccer, Football is actually a worse offense.

By your own standars, calling American to people from the USA and then complaining when people say football is as hypocritical. And yes, there's an American grouping, it's people from the American continent

I agree.  I don't care if people call Soccer Football.  Though Soccer is more accurate.  Like I said, I find it annoying when someone gets angry at a more accurate usage.

Just how I don't are if people call people from the USA, Americans, though something else would be more accuarte.  Such as People from the USA.  Nothing so short to put in one word as of yet though.

America Isn't a continent though.

If you were taught it was, you had a crappy geography teacher.

Scientifically North America and South America are two different continents.

Fun fact though... technically Europe isn't a continent, it's just mentioned as one due to western conceit.

That's fine... but you are being taught wrong... get a map from a geographical society and they will be two different continents.

Are you going to believe map makers in your country or the international geological and geographical societies?

I mean, you can specifically point out why North and South America are two different continents pretty simply and eaisly scientifically.

They have totally different cores and are only connected by a very small stretch of land.

I mean think for a second... what would make North and South America the same continent....

Yet make Europe and Asia two different continents?

Thereby calling it football is clearly less accuarate then an abbreviation of Assosiation.

You've proven nothing. you keep saying that. Grid iron borrowed its rules during the start from rugby not football hence American Rugby.

I have addressed eveerything you've said. Look up me evolution of Football=the rules we have today. Question answered.

Kasz, I said I'm not gonna argue and I'm not going to, this is a football thread and not a "Is America a continent" one, I know you love to argue with people but this is enough, no more non-WC discussion, I stand by what I say, you can stand by your thing, but let's not derail the thread more, specially not when there's a WC going on here

If you don't want to argue about it... that's fine, but I don't see how you can stand by what you say when the scientists who study this for a living say you are wrong.

I have no Idea what I'm going to do about Slovenia V Algeria.

I want to watch it but it's on at freaking 4:30 in the morning for me.  That was fine 4 years ago... but now... eh...

Netherlands Denmark is the same situation and that should be an awesome game.
