Just how I don't are if people call people from the USA, Americans, though something else would be more accuarte.  Such as People from the USA.  Nothing so short to put in one word as of yet though.

Football  is more accurate as it's its name.

American Rugby is more accurate than Ameican Football.

You still have no arguement to the fact that many kinds of football existed before there was any kind of Codified rules for assosiation football.

Thereby calling it football is clearly less accuarate then an abbreviation of Assosiation.
