Forums - PC - Folding@Home GPU3 Beta

For anyone here who runs Folding@Home-GPU and a newer Nvidia GPU should consider beta testing the new GPU3 client. Anyone running an ATI GPU will have to wait till AMD and Stanford figure out why the client isnt running correctly on their GPUs.

My GTX470 is loving this. Its actually running at 99% at 89c which isnt bad at all. I just wish I had the new high-flow setup from EVGA.

This is good news; GPU3 should fix a lot of the variability in performance that was making some WUs unfair.

It is suprising, though, that the 5xxx graphics cards which have been out for nine months have no support while the 470 and 480 of which have been out for three months get full support. And 2xxx-4xxx performance is still a tiny fraction of what it should be. Hopefully GPU3 will fix that too and my other comp's 3850 can fold.

Its because of CUDA. It makes developing this type of thing easier. Hence why Nvidia really didnt have to help with the code unlike AMD who needs to sit down and basically recode the entire program to use their GPUs.

Why don't they just use OpenCL? Then it would work on both GPUs.

I guess assembly and C are easier to code in? Or isnt supported on ATI.

Because this...

The first GPU3 uses CUDA, but after OpenCL matures (on both ATI and NVIDIA) will be will able to finish and optimize to OpenCL.

Ah. Good.

I dislike CUDA (and AMD's Stream's) proprietary spec and hardware tie; OpenCL should mean that improvements to the software are expressed on both GPUs, rather than which company has paid the most (because seriously, supporting 4xx instead of 5xxx can't be a neutral decision).

I know why it hasn't happened yet. But our 5xxx series Radeons are just dying to assist.
