Forums - Gaming - Western developers are ruling Japanese developers this gen!

Could this have anything to do with PC devs jumping ship?
Big genre of the gen... FPS and WRPG.... yeah PC ....

besides that, it's true that jap devs are more "silent" this gen (besides N).... the one I have the most games from is Capcom (after N), but it's not BIG releases...

The Wii and DS were really dominating in Japan until now. Recently the PS3 has gained quite a bit of steam for Japan, Japanese developers/publishers will need some time to adjust to this, but I think we will see more and better efforts in the future (the 360 can also indirectly benefit from this as it's a non-factor for Japan).

In general I find it funny western gamers think western developers are better. If you ask a Japanese gamer, he would probably come to another conclusion.

Naughty Dog: "At Naughty Dog, we're pretty sure we should be able to see leaps between games on the PS3 that are even bigger than they were on the PS2."

PS3 vs 360 sales

I don't think the line is as obvious between japanese and western developers as it once was.

I mean...can you really tell RE5 was done by Japan? How about Dead Rising? I really can't tell as they both play like a lot of western developed games...

That's why I always loved Capcom games :)

They get points for Dead Rising which is awesome... but Resident Evil 5 is a catastrophy.

"Lets take a 5 year old game that was amazing back then but surpassed today and make it 1/2 the length, unplayable in single player, make the story and characters laughable. We will keep the dated controls and add coop. Everyone loves coop!"

While I agree with the rest but what do u mean it's unplayable in single player?

The game can't be played alone.

You have to play it with the girl following you... She is CPU controlled if you don't have player 2 to do it, and has some of the worst AI you will see in a videogame. She will waste your ammo and health items like they are nothing...

I have more western games but the quality that japenese developers put into their game is still much better. Some examples are MGS4 and VC. I think there are more cool Jpanese games coming out soon such as The Last Guardian, MGS:PW, FFV13...

We're not tools of the government, or anyone else. Fighting was the only thing... the only thing I was good at. But... at least I always fought for what I believed in.

lol yeah I noticed that. But can't you take the gun off of her? Or at least not give her any ammo and stuff?

Bioware is the only Western Dev to step it up. and that is with the Mass Effect games.

Misleading title.

Well, in response to the OP, Nintendo is sitting on top right now in both hardware and software sales. Also, FFXIII sales > any other RPG on consoles this gen.

Let's see my top 5 games of this generation:

1. MGS4

2. Demon's Souls

3. Valkyria Chronicles

4. Super Mario Galaxy

5. Uncharted series

1 Western game, 3 new intellectual properties, 2 being Japanese.

You can prefer Western games if you like, I won't say you're wrong in doing so, but keep in mind others have different opinions.

@Barozi: I can tell older Capcom games are Japanese made with Western influence.

But this gen they've gone too Western, and to be honest, their efforts have been terrible, apart from Dead Rising, MHTri, and their Mega Man games.

Edit: I didn't pay attention to the bit about FFXIII not being new. So scratch that. But my point about Nintendo stands. Even if there aren't many Wii games, they still put all other titles to shame with their sales.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

You can...but does that pass as fun gameplay these days?

What happens when you are busy killing and she decides to break a few crates open and take the first aid spray in there? :)

61 Japanese games, 40 Western games this generation.

So anecdotally, it appears not. On the other hand, this ratio was probably more lopsided previous generations, so...meh?

Is that your gaming collection, or million sellers, or what?

I just can't figure out where those figures figure.

I've played a few hours of RE5 but I didn't know for sure that she actually opens the crates and takes stuff. I suspected she does though. Does she really?
