Forums - Gaming - Western developers are ruling Japanese developers this gen!

Speaking in general terms... If you like games that want to be movies (guns, violence, special effects), then you're gonna prefer Western games (Gears Of War, Uncharted 2). If you prefer games that rely more on "fun" (collecting, animation, arcade style gameplay), then you're probably gonna be on the Japanese side (Mario et al).

I'm more in the Japanese camp myself. Unfortunately CAPCOM is trying to become Western for some reason, thus their recent string of western-born failures, like Bionic Commando and Dark Void.

I love co-op.

Just not their co-op.

i may own more western games on my consoles however my main reason for getting my consoles was for the Japanese games (MGS4, FFXIII, etc) and those are the games i have enjoyed a lot more and fondly remember. The only advantage the western games have is quantity, replay value, and larger budget(which they mostly use for eye candy instead of developing a decent story). As for my handhelds however, they are dominated by Japanese games and as u may have guessed is where i spend a majority of my game time btw

I don't think this is just perception. Western developers are dominating the Console market, well on the HD side at least. Shooters are the big thing now and Japanese developers have nothing to offer in this area. There has also been a switch in the RPG market on consoles. WRPG are doing better then they ever have and JRPG are struggling. There are exceptions of course. FFXIII sold great, but after that you have a bunch of JRPG with mediocre sales.

I think western developers have done a better job this gen, but the main reason they are ahead in terms of sales has more to do with a change in taste then a drop off in quality.

Couldn't agree more as I only own a couple Eastern games. I suspect the East to continue to decline until China's economy supports a much larger middle class, then the East will have the capital and population to support a thriving Eastern gaming market. That seems scary to me as I find Eastern pop culture annoying and feminine . Not trying to annoy anyone, but I tell it how I see it.

The fact that you don't own Japanese games doesn't imply much about the gaming world as a whole, especially with the 360 being 'the American console'

There are a huge number of new japanese franchises
Wii ________
Nintendogs
Professor Layton
If you're going to claim Modern Warfare as a new IP then I'm going to claim RE5, Killzone 2 and FFXIII,which differ much more from their predecessors than MW does
Big brain Academy
Valkyria Chronicles
Resistance
motorstorm
Uncharted
Brain Age
Tomodachi Collection
Rythym Heaven

@ cheebee - Red Steel is made by the French, and the 2nd game isn't even set in Japan

These are all western devloped games, and if you think they count as japanese because sony owns them then you should read the fine print. SCEA owns resitance and uncharted and SCEE owns killzone and motorstorm. The japanese branch of sony had nothing to do with their creation.

Ask me about being an elitist jerk

Time for hype

The gen is not over yet sooooooooo yeah

imho even tho my most fave games this gen has been western titles, both sides have some issues with generic games ....

Western - way way too many sci fi outer space marine vs evil plots

East - way way too many generic main character led games, they need different hair cuts in the least

But the thing is both these aspects are popular, so they milk it

SO in all fairness both sides have some amazing games in all genre...so good news for the gamers :)

Depends on the console you own, and no I do not think the Japanese got outpaced.

Meh. I've never owned many Japanese games. With the move of many pc developers and pc like games to the xbox and then the ps3 and 360 this gen I think the trend was inevitable.

I love coop too. But when it messes with one of the best single player experiences of last gen...its personal!
