Have video games reached Computer Generated Image quality? Absolutely. Anything you create in MS paint is, quite literally, CGI (Computer Generated Image) quality. The question as you posed it is absolutely meaningless. I have an idea on what you are trying to ask and I will address that as well.

I assume you mean have we gotten to the point where cut scenes look as good as real-time game play. The answer to that is absolutely not. It is functionally impossible. You can always put more shinies, polish, and over-all quality into images that are pre-rendered as opposed to real-time. There is absolutely no way to get around that unless the game itself creates images that mirror reality perfectly. Until then the machines can always run something that is closer and thus looks better.

This,

and the correct answer was "Not possible"

Not on consoles. Crysis is about the closest thing to it.

you people overrate crysis like its a generation ahead in graphics...

OT:

GOW III and U2 have the best character models in ANY VIDEO GAME imo, and surpass the CGI IN FF XIII in detail

I agree that Crysis is over-rated, I think that vids of GT5 look as good as some user-mods of homecooked Crysis.

That said, I don't think that character models in GoWIII or UT look better than Crysis, or XIII CGI.

@OP

I believe that in screenshots people would believe we have reached CGI quality this gen, but in motion we certainly haven't. The best graphics I've seen this gen have been Uncharted 2(yes over crysis) but that is due to the artstyle and art-direction, and not polygon count or technical supremacy. The beautiful vistas and high-rez textures are a stunning combination.

I think that next gen, we will finally reach the CGI quality thresh-hold.....the end of next gen, or maybe the one after that. We're still a few years away.

...and by CGI, I am implying that we will reach the point off diminishing returns vs reality.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.
