Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo feeling Keving Butler's (and maybe Move's too) pressure? :-P

I read in some previous thread that in April Gamestop bundled Wii with Wii Sports Resort and WM+ with no overprice, but now Nintendo is doing it.

No price cut, at least for the time being, but maybe more significantly yesterday for the first time I heard on the radio the most known celeb Nintendo hires for advertising in Italy announcing the official bundle: for no overprice on the usual list price, "less than" 199.99€, now Wii will be bundled not only with Wii Sports, but also with Wii Sports Resort and Wii Motion Plus. I don't know whether retailers will apply to the new bundle the usual 10-20€ discount they applied before, though. Maybe they'll cash in on it as long as possible...

Anyway, t3h almighty K3vin Butl3r did what Move and Natal alone couldn't!

But in Wii's favour, despite the small blow to its previous apparent invincibility, this should make it a lot safer from Move's attack. And while some blind fanboy was in denial, I wrote in the past that to counter Move's attack, Nintendo would have been forced to offer 1:1 tracking standard, with no overprice and not as optional anymore.

I guess the most sensible move now would be to start producing WiiMotes with WM+ built-in, to cut costs.

Dude, seriously? You're from Italy right? We've had this bundle (black Wii+Sports+WS Resort+WM Plus) for like a year now in Europe. The official one from Nintendo, not retailer-specific bundles, mind you. You honestly didn't know that, or was Italy an exception and didn't get the bundle until now..? O_o I find the latter hard to believe. Honestly, it's been out for ages, and yes, a lot of retailers do sell it for even less than €199... in fact I saw it just yesterday for just €172.

Maybe in the Netherlands, but I heard of it here for the first time yesterday and even big stores hadn't it on their shelves yet.

I saw around Black Wii with WSR and WM+ bundles, but before this offer I never found them for less than 225€ anywhere, maybe there were some limited offers at less than 200€, but limited, now it looks like it's official.

I'd like to know about this in France, I checked now on Kelkoo France and found black Wii + WSR + WM+ bundles for as low as 173€, but white bundles are still over 200€, so it looks like if it's official it's quite a new thing there too.

Maybe black Wii didn't sell well in EU? It should have been more expensive than white, originally. So it looks like in Italy either sales were satisfying enough to no cut the price, or retailers weren't ready to cut their margin to sell more of them.

Anyhow, just checked Kelkoo Italy too and currently the best offer for the new white bundle is 180€, while until the last week the best I could find around was roughly that price for Wii + Wii Sports only.

Lol how about no and no. Theres nothing in the Playstation to fear anymore. Sony are more dangerous to themselves than they are to Nintendo. They are past their prime whilst Nintendo are just getting started.

Hmm. That's really strange, I guess Italy really must've been an exception, then. 'Cos it really has been out since last year pretty much all over Europe, as far as I know. I've seen it on a lot of different European retailers' websites, and from a lot of European members here, too, from different countries. Here's the initial announcement: http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/news/2009/limited_edition_black_wii_bundle_announced_for_europe_including_wii_sports_resort_and_wii_motionplus_14833.html

... It's been out for over 7 months already. The official Nintendo-suggested pricepoint was €199, if it was sold for much more, then that was individual retailers being greedy I guess (I do know a lot of retailers over here were welling it for €209 instead of €199, but 10 euros isn't that bad, luckily). The black bundle was apparently supposed to be a 'limited edition', too, but that was just PR-talk, as it's been readily available since it launched, and shops are being re-stocked on a regular basis.

The regular white Wiis (without M+ and Resort) are sort of all over the place when it comes to pricing, I've seen them online and in actual shops ranging from €169-€229... A lot of shops even had the white one selling alongside the black one, which had all the extras, but sold the white one for the same price or even a lot more. Just weird.

Ah well, Europe's strange that way, sometimes, with all the different countries, retailers, and currencies. After all, Nintendo's 'official' pricepoint is only a suggested one, and individual retailers are free to price their products any way they want. Sometimes that sucks, but it can lead to some sweet deals, as well.

Kevin Butler?
why, he isn't exactly a sistem seller, he is an icon for them (somehow their mario )

It's strange... sometimes I wonder what would happen If nintendo REALLY tries to compete for marketshare and software sales like the others.

For example... price cuts every year. Or cheaper games, greatest hits series (Mario sold 14,000,000 copies in 6 months at full price). Or buying third party games. Etc...

Nintendo is not worried about anything, I guess. They almost look like they have no competition.

Yeah... Nintendo tried that, with the N64 and GameCube. Look where it got them. Then with Wii, they decided it was enough, and to play by their own set of rules, and to not fight their competitors directly with the same kind of software and strategies. I'd say they made a smart decision.

The difference is not huge, but enough, no retailer here could have been able to sell Wii+WS at 189€ (the most common price, while 179€ was the best price) if the bundle Wii+WS+WSR+WM+ was available at 199€.

About that announce, I knew of it and I saw them around since the beginning, it's just the price that was quite higher here. Anyway, I couldn't find an official price for it neither in your link, nor in the articles written back then that I googled.

Pressure? That was done in Europe last year and was certainly going to happen in the US.
Everything going according to planned.

Who? What?

Nintendo pressure? Maybe... if I sell my wii and all my wii games, and then I buy a Ps3+Move+PSeye+WiiHDgames; and of course I need to prefer Butler over Reggie.

And that's never ever gonna happen.

Ah okay, so you did know, I thought you didn't know about the European black bundle at all until now, but it was just that it was more expensive, then. Yeah, so that was just individual retailers being greedy, haha.

The new black bundle was launched in Europe in November, but prior to that, in September, the original bundle (white Wii + Wii sports) got a pricecut, from €249 to €199.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/europe-gets-eur-50-wii-price-cut_1?unbury=1293141

When the black bundle with WS Resort & WM+ came along a couple of months later, the price stayed the same, so €199. There was no mention of a pricecut then, because really the price didn't drop. It remained €199, but because the new bundle included WM+ & WS Resort, the overall value of the bundle was higher.

Incidentally, back then the UK & Ireland didn't get the pricecut for the white Wii + Sports, but instead a bundle including WS Resort and WM+ for the old high price.

See this link for further clarification: http://nintendo-revolution.blogspot.com/2009/09/nintendo-cuts-wii-price-by-twenty.html

'Just to clarify the situation in Europe: Nintendo has not set a recommended retail price, but will reduce the wholesale price of the console. This will result in a price cut from €249 to €199, valid for the whole of Europe, except for the UK and Ireland. There, the price will remain but the bundle will be upgraded by the inclusion of ´Wii Sports Resort´ and a Motion Plus dongle.'

Later, in November, this bundle was made into the official black Wii bundle and released in the rest of Europe, albeit at the current €199 pricepoint.
