Piracy and not releasing during a holiday season probably hurt some sales.

When i see mediocre New IP RPG's like Dragon Age Origins outselling it I get angry. (PS3 xbox combined numbers for dragon age)

Would being multiplat have helped its sales?

What exactly are your expectations for Mass Effect 2?  The original, according to VGChartz sold a bit over 2 million.  How much more are you expecting sales on the 360 to be of the sequel?

And, in response to your shot at Dragon Age Origins, WHY do you think a single platform RPG by Bioware is supposed to sell out an RPG done by them for TWO platforms that are approaching equal in installed base?

dragon age mediocre? you do know it's made by Bioware, it got rpg of the year for 2009.

i expected Mass effect 2 to get those sales, MS have been hyping other games, and they didn't even bundle it, why do they bundle multiplats like bayonetta and ff13 and not exclusives?

There's your problem.  The game is selling quite well for an RPG on a single platform.  The only RPGs that have thus far been truly successful on one platform are Fable II and Final fantasy XIII, the latter only because of 20 years of brand legacy and the fact that most people buying the game happen to own the same console.

If Mass Effect 2 had been multiplat, it'd have higher total sales, but it's sales on 360 are quite respectable for an RPG.

Key part being for an RPG.  The RPG is one of the more "hardcore" of the hardcore genres, thus RPGs generally have lower sales than other, more accesible genres (action/adventure games like Zelda, shooters, etc.).

It is? Its performing less than Fable 2, Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls IV, Mass effect 1 even on a single platform despite being called much better than each of them.

Get over it. Of course it has no chance to outsell those games. Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Fable are huge franchises. Mass Effect debuted in this generation. U can't expect it to touch the top dogs just yet.

It deserves to do much better than all of them (except Fallout 3), its just not fair when I see it selling like this.

now you know what ps3 owners feel.

if the game was released in the holiday season it would have gotten higher sales. it doesn't have online, and it's an rpg, you can't expect a game to have legs when their's lots of competition. and most people who wanted the game would have gotten it on pc. Bioware's focus is not on consoles but on pc, games like dragon age origins played better on the pc then on consoles.

1. Released right after the holidays

2. You need to have a ME save to enjoy ME2 fully

3. Piracy

Who's the best Pac, Nas, and Big. Just leave it to that.

Mass Effect 2 still sold very well well and it will continue to sell over time (similar to first ME ). Fallout , Elder Scrolls or Fable are stronger brands while Dragon Age was a multiplat (plus its more traditional RPG). So i think this thread is a bit of a fail

It's fine. Look at Fallout 3, it's at 3 million on 360 after a couple years. ME2 has been out for a few months.

Because most pepole who buy WRPGs in the west don't do so because of the story and different experiences that they can have, but because statistics are cool, and ME2 lost a lot of the min/max that was in the first.

no WRPG's like KOTOR sold because of their story.

WRPG's like oblivion for their vast array of innovative content like the Dark Brotherhood

So ME2 didn't sell well because it didn't have statstics? ROFL!

@OP

I don't know, like others said its the mystery of the generation in terms of sales.

I'm pretty sure that if you took KotOR and stripped everything SW related from it, it wouldn't have sold half of what it did.

Innovative content? I won't call it innovative, but you're right, pepole bought Oblivion because they had a lot of different sidequests and a lot of things to do, ways to upgrade the character etc, that's still different from the focus of ME2.

But why would you do that? Thats what KOTOR is, it even had a better story than Episode 2.

So what was ME2's focus then? I haven't played it so I don't know.

That's not saying much dude.

It's at 1.75m not including downloads or PC sales according to this site. That's before it's first holiday season so it should pass ME1 by next year. It appears it may never reach the 3m I predicted without heavy bundling like UC1, LBP, Fable 2 etc.

I have never seen any game get attacked by a group of fans like ME2 has been. The 'deal with it' article from IGN provoked an incredible backlash from UC2 lovers that continues today. Any attempt at spreading the good word through the internet was drowned in a tidal wave of hate. I expected this thread to be another thinly disguised bash but I am wrong on occasion.

If it isn't living up to our sales expectations it might be it's status between wrpgs that have a small but loyal fanbase and TPSs which have a larger base but want mp. Competition has been pretty stiff this year as well. So many excuses, so little time.

i just wonder how much the game would have sod aditionally if it had been released on the ps3 as well.
