Forums - Sales - Gamestop quarterly results conference call "PS3 out of stock 80% of time"

So both Sony and Wii supply constrained? Interesting, wonder what the numbers would be like if they weren't. The sales are really lagging.

Sony won't ship more old 2000 models than the 'estimated' demand because they are losing money for each sold.

This news basically confirms that shortages in Q1 prevented the PS3 from outselling the 360 by a comfortable margin. A real pity, because Sony could have sold unholy numbers during the month of March.

It didn't. The sales overall have been very low, so we have no idea if they would have sold more or not. Most likely, they would not of.

This shortage is being very over played. This was a shortage from Gamestop. I just checked Amazon and they have PS3s in stock. Target does too. Walmart and Bestbuy are out of the cheaper models, but not of more expensive ones. This is misconception number 2. There have never been an increase in demand that was not seasonal (i.e. Christmas). There has only been an increase in Quanity Demanded. What's the difference? Changes in demand mean that consumers will buy more units at the same price. If Peanut butter is proven to be good for young children, peanut butter sales will go up. When "Supersize Me," came out, demand for McDonalds went down. Quanity Demanded is what we demand at a set price level. When prices goes up, we demand less and when price goes down, we demand more. What is happening to the PS3 is actually very bad. They are not increase in demand like Nintendo is. They only sell more units when the price falls. PS3s are not totally out of stock, just the ones that are cheap. If consumers really had to have PS3s, the refurbished ones and the higher priced ones would be out of stock, but they are not.

In conclusion, the PS3 would have not beated the 360. There is not a huge demand for PS3s, and the sales it would be seeing are from price drops.

Ugh...why are there so many ignorant people.  The PS3 IS sold out on amazon.  It has been for months.  If you go there and try and buy one, they will REDIRECT you to another company that is selling them for 70 DOLLARS OVER THE MSRP (I know, from your logic, if the PS3 was any good, people would happily fork this over anyway.  That logic is dumb).  It has been like this for months, yet people that want to bash on the ps3 keep claiming it is in stock there.  IT IS NOT.

The 120 GB has been sold out for months on both Best Buy and Gamestop's websites.  The larger hard drive comes and goes, as there is less demand, however, on a normal day they are tough to come by as well (all of my local best buys are currently out of stock of the 250GB).  Target's website says it will be weeks before they are in stock, but you can still order them now (but you wont be getting your PS3 probably for a good month).

I personally couldnt' care less about how much more it would have sold if it hadn't been supply constrained, I just know they are (and have been) tough to get.  It's pretty obvious from your post, however, that you just want to say the XBox is better, and the PS3 is a crappy product no one wants.  Your opinion is noted.

lol no its not.

Youre right...NOW.  As of two days ago my quote was correct.  Even yesterday it still said "usually ships in 1-2 weeks".  It also has a new "Newest Version" icon at the top.  My guess would be that they FINALLY got the new 40nm shipment out and have it in stock.  I'm all for it.

You know that can also mean they are going to move the system out in 1-2 weeks. That is how it is with most products. Amazon did say "New" 2-3 days ago.

Yesterday was the first day I saw that it said "Ships in 1-2 weeks".  And most products don't have a timeline like that, like the PS3 has now (you can have it ship immediately).  As far as the "new", i'm not talking about it not being used, but the "newest model" icon at the top by the price is new.  It's obvious they just got a shipment of new models.  Which, as I said, is great.  I've never cared about the sales, I've just got annoyed that people kept saying it wasn't supply constrained, when it obviously was (again, I dont' care about the reason, whether it be high demand or low supply).  It looks like this seems to be abating now, though, which is great.

Edit: Just read the link, it runs through April.  So not really relevant now...

I think this is BS, really.

Care to explain? Why would gamestop lie about the PS3 out of stock 80% of time?

So you still refuse to accept that there is/was a shortages of PS3?

Nah, I think it's just an excuse for PS3 not lightin' up the charts like the industry wants and expected.   I do believe that there were definitely shortages created by holiday demand.  But for us to be well into May (almost June) and Sony still can't keep up with "demand" is a little too ridiculous.  The industry is just being apologetic towards Sony like it usually is.

@ smashchu

The article you posted mostly proves me right. Their source says that a defensive strategy was "partly" the reason. Then he goes on further to explain how much MS could profit with the X-Box brand if they were to defeat and drive Sony out of the console market. On a smaller note, this is from the mouth of an analyst, not a MS exec.

You can post definitions from Wikipedia all you want, but that doesn't refute the fact that demand for the PS3 was higher. This latest fiscal year, Sony shipped 13 mil consoles, 3 mil more than the previous FY. If demand had stayed the same, 13 mil would have been more than enough. But, even with 3 mil more consoles shipped, it wasn't enough to keep a steady supply in stores.

As for the shortages on Amazon, they only just got those a day or 2 ago. When I posted my first message on here a day before that, they were only selling them from Target. It had been like that for weeks. And before that, they were selling them from WWD. Amazon themselves got a shipment more than a month ago and were out within a week or 2 (during that time PS3 was #1 in sales in the video game category), and were sold out until now.

OMG, man I had a real good laugh at that one!  Are we talking about the same industry that refused to give the PS3 quality multi-plats until a year or so ago, with some not wanting to develop for it at all (Valve)?  The same industry that said the PS3 was a failure, and that Sony might drop from the console market and abandon any plans for the PS4?  Let's be honest, this industry has been doing nothing but bash the PS3 until around '08, when sales and games started picking up.  And it didn't really get fully behind it until the HUGE success of the Slim.

  • It was someone interviewing a Microsoft excecutive. The 360 is a defensive strategy
  • Oh Geez, you've got to be.......look, the fact is that demand is not increasing becuase price is decreasing. Think of it this way. Consumers don't want it more. They've always had this current demand for PS3s, but they could not realize it due to price barriers. When Nintendo releases software like New Super Mario Wii, people want Wiis more and will be willing to pay the same price for a greater quantity. All Quanity Demanded is the quanity sold at a set price level. When you lower price, you increase the quantity and this is quantity demanded. So far, Sony has never had an increase in demand
  • They had stock since your first post. I checked.

It's hard to refute that when we see it all the time. Analyst bend the truth to make it look better then it is (Malstrom has pointed out a lot of them).
