Forums - Microsoft - When will Xbox support mkv or HD video sources

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to convert my blu ray disks to avi so i can watch on through my xbox 360. I would much prefer to rip them to .mkv or .264 files or some other HD format rather than the non HD avi format.

Before i do this does anyone know if there is plans for MicroSoft to support any HD video sources, i wouldn't mind waiting a bit if so.

Has anyone done this before, can anyone recommend good software for converting blu ray disks to avi with full picture and 5.1 audio quality. Size of files not an issue. Also, don't mind buying software if its good and resonably priced.

Cheers,

There is absolutely no word on whether those formats will ever arrive to xbox 360. There is certainly no word about mkv or .264 files. But maybe they might release some sort of HD format compatibility, but thats just pure speculation! Sorry!

I have a Mac, and to convert HD files such as MKV/.264 I use Quicktime 7 pro (less than £10.00 or something I cannot remember) and MKV Merge (Free) which Splits the files to 4GB, then I convert them to MP4 using Quicktime 7 Pro. Rather than Quicktime 7 Pro, you might find iSkysoft Video Converter which has an Xbox 360 option. Unfortunately I don't know much about ripping Bluray DVDs

Another option is to stream, look at TVersity it might do the job.

Use the WMVHD codex, that's HD video supported by the 360. Just google it.

Thanks guys, that sounds perfert for what i need.

Will definitely try the WMVHD now, well once my new laptop arrives next week.

Has anyone ever used a program called BluRay Ripper

Sorry yes the forgot the WMVHD codec is compatible. But I really don't think its an idea codec, otherwise it would be far more common.

If you have Windows 7 you can play MKV files through Media Center using the Xbox as an extender.  You just need to install the DivX Plus Codec pack.

the Zune Software just updated to support Xvid... so it may be possible to stream movies through the Zune software (much better than using media player and it only allows supported videos kind of snips it in the bud so you know it's compatible
