Explain that then?

Japanese also have a thing about quality. If it's a piece, most likely they aren't going to throw down their hard earned money.

I think it's more about the original Xbox being practically designed so nobody in Japan would want it, and the image sticking. The 360 has addressed the worst of its predecessor's faults and is doing a bit better, but it's not exactly a turn-around on of PS3-level magnitude.

Most of the stuff about Japanese culture being this and that honestly sounds like people can't understand a very complex issue like the difference between gaming in the West and Japan, and blame it on something vague and simple like "they don't like foreign stuff" or "it's too big for their homes".

+1 for Parokki

How many games have sold more than 1 Million units in Japan and been produced by a western developer?

1, Donkey Kong 64 produced by Rare and published by Nintendo ...

What is the best selling western published game in Japan? Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas at just over 400,000 units ...

Western developers simply do not understand the market and thus a western developed console is at a huge disadvantage in Japan.

It's poor marketing, they never really understood how to push the system there. First of all, unlike here where X = cool in a lot of ways, X = bad in Japan. So their system is basically the "bad-box". Who would buy that?

 yep thats the exact reason

@happysquirriel - actually #1 western published game is World of Warcraft but that also counts for world wide sales between it and it's expansion pack. 10.5 million copies is a large amount and jsut about that with it's exopansion pack.

Because the Japanese don't like American-made stuff.

Explain to me why iPod sells awesome in Japan?

Cause they are idiots.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Because most of the big games aren't appeal. Amazingly some people want to play something other than Halo, Gears of War, Bioshock etc.

Do we actually have any Japaneese specific sales numbers?

PC gaming in Japan is a tiny market and is typically associated with hentai games of 'questionable' content ... I would expect that WoW probably had far less accounts in Japan than in Korea or China.

Right. And for reference the nickname for the MS console is "shit-box" in Japan, not "bad-box". I'm not making that up. The 360 has a mountain of bad image to overcome in Japan.
