Forums - Sales - why is the 360 so bad in japan?

Im actually Korean (born in America) so I have an idea of the mentality. And I go to University of Houston, which is second most multicultural school in the nation behind NYU so I see alot of cultures. Asians (especially international) are incredibly brand loyal and high maintenance.

I'm actually Japanese. I've actually lived in Japan. Would you like to extend your analysis of all things Japanese from your Korean viewpoint and tell me how it applies to our relationship?

What this means is that Xbox360 does not appeal to the Japanese market. It is not their fault. MS failed in this specific market (VG), that does not mean Japanese people hate american products or even MS products.

Japanese tend to favor brands, they like Sony and Nintendo.

As been proven already, Microsoft is releasing those JRPG's and the Japanese are responding but with caution, because the original Xbox had a bad taste for them. The original Xbox was without JRPG's and very little software to appeal to them.

Now that the Xbox 360 has been released and Microsoft is now releasing the software that caters to them. They are now bitting, but its a slow process for Microsoft. I see the Xbox 360 hitting 700k or even 800k before this generation ends. This generation that we are in gives Microsoft some hope next generation as they build a fanbase.

I mean

Blue Dragon
Dead or Alive 4
Ace Combat 6
Dead Rising
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Eternal Sonata
Gears of War
The Idolmaster
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition
Dynasty Warriors 6 and many others....

They all cater to the Japanese hardcore audience, but it is a slow process. Its a wait and see and Microsoft will have a foot in the country of Japan. Its just going to take a couple of generations for it to happen.

But Microsoft needs to find the audience that is not hardcore and try to look beyond it. Even if MGS4 or FFXIII was manage to be released on the Xbox 360 in Japan. It wouldn't do any significant sales for the console. Since the Japanese will go with brand (Sony) and buy the version on that console. As we can see with Dynasty Warriors 6 in Japan. They like the PS3 version better...Its a wait and see type deal, like how we are seeing if the PS3 can keep its sales up.

Because the Japanese have the weirdest tastes in games, they would rather play crappy golf or soccer games than Halo, Bioshock, etc...

No, those types of games aren't crappy...they just have different tastes. That is allowed right? They'd rather play golf and soccer games, instead of Halo. And you'd rather play Halo, instead of golf and soccer games. We, the US, and Japan, have very different tatses in games. That's why you see a game like Dynasty Warriors sell like mad in Japan, but only do mediocre stateside, and on the flip side, Gears sold millions here, but did basically nothing over there

Currently playing:

Unreal Tournament 3, Warhawk, Rock Band, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy XII, DMC2, then 3, and Radiata Stories

Okay now you are discussing video games. Japanese tend to only like games that are within their society. For example they like games that are easy and like to play games that they have been playing for years. Here is a article I looked up for you: Here

That article will help you out alot 8)

It did the same to me and I got a good understanding.

I think it's more about the original Xbox being practically designed so nobody in Japan would want it, and the image sticking. The 360 has addressed the worst of its predecessor's faults and is doing a bit better, but it's not exactly a turn-around on of PS3-level magnitude.

Most of the stuff about Japanese culture being this and that honestly sounds like people can't understand a very complex issue like the difference between gaming in the West and Japan, and blame it on something vague and simple like "they don't like foreign stuff" or "it's too big for their homes".

It's poor marketing, they never really understood how to push the system there. First of all, unlike here where X = cool in a lot of ways, X = bad in Japan. So their system is basically the "bad-box". Who would buy that?

i dunni they probally dont advertise as much their. Plus it is and American company.

What I got out of this article and what I liked and a true statement was this:

"The Japanese don’t hate Microsoft; they just dislike the Xbox 360. They still feel bad about the original Xbox, which never delivered enough of the type of games they wanted. A system that never matched the Japanese tastes for design, marketing or games".
