That doesn't make much sense, the only difference in the newer models is the RSX chip went from 65 nm to 45 nm, the PS3 has been making these chips smaller and smaller for the last three years but they never needed to drop the price.

So no they won't temp drop the price, the average consumer won't even realize that there's a new chip in the new models.

Sony doesn't usually give a temporary price cut, instead they prefer to slowly reduce stock and keep it at low levels, while also reimbursing retailers for any of the older sku's that were unbought. Sony, at least in this regard is highly profit conscious.
