2010, this was the year of gaming that had the most to offer; God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Splinter Cell Conviction, Mass Effect 2, etc. In the course of the last 4 weeks, I have played through GoW3, Heavy Rain, SC:C, needless to say I've been in graphical bliss (except SC:C graphics disappointed me) and high production value gaming bliss.
Despite all the money thrown to these great studios, somehow a small low budget game with some horrendous graphics managed to be the most enjoyable, and immersive gaming experience I've yet to experience in 2010. How does something like this happen I ask myself, I already played what I believed would be the "atmospheric" game of 2010 (Bioshock 2) 2 months ago. But no game as of yet has made me feel fear like I have in Metro 2033, and I've played my share of survival horror ranging from Dead Space, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Condemned etc. Below are 3 aspects I think need to put in more survival horror games for great immersion!
1. Unlimited spawning enemies: It's rare in a game where ammo is limited that the enemies themselves are...unlimited in many areas. This is an aspect I absolutely love and believe should be implemented in more survival horror games, immersion doesn't occur when I kill 4 monsters and suddenly the scary music is gone and I know it's time to explore. The scariest times are when I have to explore and fight at the same time.
2. Librarian: The librarian monster is without a doubt in my mind THE BEST MONSTER IDEA ever created! Now I played on Hardcore and killing a librarian will cost you 2-3 clips (that's about 1/5th of my ammo supply), only to have a new one pop out 10 seconds later. So how do you stop such a beast? Simple, you must stare at it...the longer you stare at a librarian the higher chance of you scaring it away with your ugly mug.
3. The F.E.A.R. like sequences! I love the crazy weird sequences that occur in FEAR! Metro 2033 devs must have hired some Monolith members because they are just as good at doing it if not better.
Of course there are plenty of bad things in the game, the upgrade system is pretty bad, along with the stealth and shooting mechanics (yah I'll pretty much say the gameplay itself is less than stellar..), but no game has come close to Metro 2033 at making me really feel like the protagonist. So what about the rest of the Chartz community, what did you like/dislike about Metro 2033?
