Forums - Gaming - Best RPG's of the year and what they did right/wrong.

Could the strategy RPG, Fire Emblem : Radiant Dawn (Wii) count on this list? It's my 2nd fav SRPG ever (behind Final Fantasy Tactics).

Nobody is crazy enough to accuse me of being sane.

I am playing DQ IV right now. It is awesome. I nominate it for RPG of the year.

The Witcher is really impressive, IMO it's the RPGOTY 2007.

1º The Witcher (PC)
2º Mass Effect (360)
3º Blue Dragon (360)

Honorable Mention- "Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer" (PC). Had this expansion been a standalone game, it could've gotten RPGOTY. This expansion almost touches the genious of the old Bioware and Black Isle.

I really wanted people to discuss what Their favorites were along with what their positive and negative points of the games were. Not much of that going on so your right my thread fails. God forbid someone having a different opinion of what makes a good game.

Shio I agree The Witcher is tops out of what Ive played.

How da F is assassins creed an rpg? Its a platformer..

I hate to quote myself but first thing I wrote about assassins creed:

" Ok I know its not an RPG but it does have a lot of RPG elements and many things I'd like to see other devs implement in future games. Its hard to Pigeon hole this game into a single genre as it combines the elements of so many."

I know it was an overly lenthy, overly verbose post. Just wondering if anyone actually read it. I guess its a good thing I didnt do all the games I liked this year like I started to.

Oh, ok...so any game with RPG elements.

Let's add Ratchet and Clank, then, because that had more upgrades than Bioshock, not to mention a solid story and fantastic graphics and cutscenes.

Just because you played the game doesn't make it an RPG.  To include AC but not Folklore is nuts.

this thread fails since the best RPG of the year... Persona 3 is not listed

Seconding this. I also LOVED Odin Sphere (though I'm probably the only person who did, outside of the amazing visuals), but it had too many slowdown problems to nominate for best RPG of the year. Hopefully the Wii sequel will fix the slowdown...

I loved Odin Sphere too. It's too bad about the slowdown. Hopefully Oboro Muramasa on the Wii won't have that issue.

Pokemon is my RPG of the year! Odin Sphere comes in a close second.

Odin Sphere was great.  I think Persona 3 was the best RPG of the year, but apparently no PS2 games count on this thread.

I am pretty sure must of the best RPGs are on PS2, DS, or PC.

Super Paper Mario is more of an RPG than anything that was listed in the 1st post. I'd also say it is a much better RPG.

For DS, maybe Dragon Quest 4 but there are so many RPGs on DS (it is the king of RPGs) so it is hard to decide.

So about these two game (2 of the top 5 RPGs on the year).

Super Paper Mario is a very fun game. Both the switching between 2d and 3d and the pointing with the wiimote are very fun. The story is also wonderful and very funny. It may have the best story of any RPG this year and does very well in gameplay. Plus, it is Mario!

Dragon Quest 4 is the best and must advanced version of Dragon Quest 4 ever made. It offers a long story, nice visuals, decent sound, and a great retro feel. The vast majority of NES games have lost their fun to me, but DQ4 is one of those games that came be a hugely updated NES game and fun. While Zelda PH may be more fun for quick play and more casual, most people would not consider it or Halo, Bioshock, AC, and Half Life to be RPGs.

Good point.  I finally got to rent Super Paper Mario and I might be having more fun playing that than Galaxy.

Persona may be better than the ones in the list (IMO the only RPG), but the game sucked. Persona 3 was a average RPG and a weak game from the SMT universe game. It get points for trying some new and original ideas, but that does not save its boring gameplay and dumb storyline.

*edit: the first 2 titles are WRPGs.

Completely disagree. My favorite RPG in years. I've played pretty much everything people listed, except for The Witcher and Fire Emblem (Starting that soon) and Persona is definitely my favorite of all of them.

Thanks to Blacksaber for the sig!

My Top 10 RPGs of the year: 1. Persona 3 (PS2) + Great art and style. + Very refreshing setting and story compared to other JRPGs. + Great combat system and lots of personae to collect. - Combat environments lack variety. - Characters look too different between art, gameplay and (especially cutscenes). 2. Mass Effect (360) + Very good story, writing, dialogue and voice acting. + One of the best looking games out there. + Amazing amount of detail. Good character customization (both physically and story-wise) - Combat system is very shooter-like (the reason why it's not number 1) - Loads of small glitches and problems. 3. Jeanne D'Arc (PSP) + Very good strategy RPG combat. + Beautiful game. - Crappy story and lame characters. - Most characters end up too similar in combat and abilities. 4. Shivering Isles (360/PC/PS3) + Much more interesting main storyline and better environments than Oblivion. + Interesting ideas and a comical world. - Same combat problems as Oblivion, same voices returning. ...

- Feels like more of the same. 5. Final Fantasy Tactcs (PSP) Great game, but a port of a 10 year old PS1 game. 6. Brave Story (PSP) + Another good looking, stylized PSP RPG. + Solid, tradtional combat that should satisfy fans of turn based JRPG fans. - Very linear, very cliche. - Lots of long, boring sections (including the beginning). 7. Rogue Galaxy (PS2) + Interesting story and good variety in the places you go. + One of the best looking PS2 games, Level 5's style as good as ever. - Did not like the combat system. 8. Eternal Sonata (360) + Mix of turn based and realtime combat + Amazing looking game. - Terrible story, writing. - Very linear, very repetitive. - Even though it's short, still manages to get boring the last few hours. 9. Pokemon Diamond/Pearl (DS) + Added online play. + Same addictive Pokemon that can last ages. - Still the same game that if you hate (or are tired of) will not have you playing for long. 10. Odin Sphere (PS2) + Beautiful. + Fun to play. - Very simplistic. - Gets old quic
