A few hours ago I finished the Bad Company 2 singleplayer and my god what a poor experience it was. Now I know that the Battlefield series is more about the multiplayer and I've spent tons of time in Battlefield 2 and still even reinstall it every once in a while and the multplayer for Bad Company 1 and 2 is quite fun. However, I feel bad for anybody else who had to stomach the singleplayer campaigns of Bad Company and it's sequel. To be quite honest, I couldn't even finish the first Bad Company as it was just so boring and I'm amazed that I was able to get through Bad Company 2.
- The enemies are stupid. They like to stand still in the open to shoot at you and they may or may not even react to you as they run out into position after they spawn. What's worse is that your squadmates are useless as well. They like to just stand around and their aim stinks most of the time. I stood around just watching for a minute or so as they threw mag after mag of bullets into an enemy and nearly all the shots miss.
- I hardly had that 'wow' feeling. As much as I hate to say it, the highly guided experience of Modern Warfare 1 and 2 provided much more excitement. Sure, the unscripted destruction and great sound effects with the Frostbite engine and the deep roars of the super weapon (which sounded familiar to the loud earthquakes as the alien ship began to wake up early on in Crysis) got my blood pumping, but these moments were few and far between.
-The story was boring and had an even dumber cliffhanger ending than Modern Warfare 2 and was probably as short if not shorter.
It's a shame that the features of the engine shines the most in multiplayer because I think stuff like the sound effects, destruction and large maps would make for an intense battle setting even if it required a more scripted experience. Heck, the closest you ever get to that in Bad Company 2's singleplayer is the humvee convoy and tank driving sections (with the very short ending segment outside a city where you select targets for a bombing run). While the story is about the 4 guys of Bad Company, it feels underwhelming that Russia is shown as dominating the world and yet you don't really experience the gravity of the situation or even fight through some large warzone (though I suppose that's what they seem to allude to for the third game). I mean, the only time where you really see a huge battle going on is in the 10 seconds before the super weapon destroys the city near the end of the game.
Anyway, rant off. What do you think? Am I just nitpicking or did you also find the singleplayer extremely underwhelming?
I'd be interesting to see if Battlefield 3 can have all the stuff Battlefield 2 had (including 64 players) on the Frostbite engine.
