I bought the PS3 just for Metal Gear.

Anyone who believes vgchartz is the final word is a moron. It claims that Substance sold 0 copies on the PC and Xbox. Some more sales numbers from the infallible VGCHARTZ for some huge titles  -

Doom 3 (PC) - http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=7289 - Apparently it didn't sell any copies.

Shadow of the Colossus -  http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=7100 - Same with SOTC.

MGS: Twin Snakes -  http://vgchartz.com/games/game.php?id=1333 - Apparently it sold 70,000 copies and was only released in Japan.

And none of the GTA games sold ANY copies on the PC. LOL. Debunked.

 Well it is true that you can find plenty of posts on all of the various game forums where people say that they bought or will buy a PS3 just for MGS4.

 The difference between that and people who bought a 360 because of Halo 3 is that about half of 360 owners bought a 360 because of Halo 3 while PS3 owners are more balkanized. Some PS3 owners bought it for MGS4. Some bought it for FFXIII. Some bought it for GT5. Some bought it for other reasons. There's some overlap among these groups, but it's unlikely that any single group comprises a large enough chunk of PS3 owners to match Halo 3.

 The sales of a sequel can be thought of as the number of sales of the previous installment plus the number of new fans the sequel attracts minus the number of fans who have lost interest in the series. The PS3's high cost is a barrier to returning fans and the small installed base leaves little hope of attracting many new ones. Barring even more drastic price (more than $100 since most PS2 buyers bought a PS2 for much less than $200) cuts within the next year, MGS4 has little hope of attaining the sales of its predecessors.

MGS4 is only going to surpass Halo 3 in overall sales if the PS3's userbase expands.

One major advantage PS2 had over Xbox was that it had a considerably larger user base. The exact opposite is now true. Looking at how sales faltered with MGS3 (honestly, this "prequel" business is a load of BS.) I doubt MGS4 is going to be able to beat a game that saw the largest launch day in entertainment history. It'll do good, but not Halo 3 good.

I don't see MGS4 outselling Halo 3. Not any time soon.

Halo series tends to really stay alive as far as sells throughout the year. Halo 3 will always be in the top 20, top 50. And generate some really good sales. MGS4 just sees to only cater to the fans more. I really don't see regular gamers who never played MGS series before jump into the mix.

If Sony markets the game well...then we will see MGS series make a turn around. But I don't see this game competing against Halo 3 as far as sales and hype.
