Forums - Gaming - What kind of phenomenon is Heavy Rain?

i do not really want to debate about this, because i thinks its pretty pointless, as ultimately its simply discussing the definition of the word "phenomenon" but since i kind of started it, i need to point out 2 things:

First, to anyone here in this thread: If the game is not so special, no sleeper hit, no phenomenon, or whatever why keep discussing it? For Example: You will never see me in a thread about sports games ranting that i don't like them, BECAUSE i don't like them.

You might want to go and ask yourself what exactly it is that compels you to participate in a discussion about this game.

Second: As much as i love this game and point and click adventures, it is not a modern point and click adventure. Heavy Rain is much closer to a modern version of Dragons Lair then any other genre.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

In the thread on Heavy Rain in Liberty City, the original posted posted this line about Heavy Rain: "Be it positive or negative reactions like the infamous "press X to Jason" bit, i think just the fact that someone thought it was worthwhile to make something like this tells a lot about the phenomenon Heavy Rain has become.".

Well, exactly what kind of phenomenon has Heavy Rain become?  All I saw is one fan-made video, here and mocking of "Press X to Jason".  Outside of that, I saw a few other spoofs.  I don't see anything that would put the game in a "phenomenon" level.  I just see stuff in keeping with a title that may be considered a sleeper hit, and related material around that.

But, is Heavy Rain really a phenomenon?

I think it both introduced the adventure genre to those who never were interested by it, and re-introduced it. I also think it, along with Uncharted 2, showed that it's a sound idea to put a shit load of money into presentation and production value. It also has its very unique quirks, and controls. While you can tie games like Uncharted 2 to Lost Planet 2, Gears of War, perhaps even inFamous or Alan Wake, or Killzone 2 to all the other FPSs, there's very few or none on the consoles you can tie Heavy Rain to.

The adventure genre was mainly on the PC, and IDK how it faired in the Western Market. Heavy Rain is D-day, the very first game to pierce the two continents again. Dunno if any other games will come through that opening, but it's there.

Ugh, Heavy Rain is precisely the type of game I cannot stand; long, drawn out story, linear gameplay, limited interactivity and customization, long cutscenes, dialogue heavy, realistic setting, not much action. Literally all of my gaming pet peeves rolled up into one game..

Not saying it wouldn't interest me as a STORY or MOVIE per se, but as a GAME, I just can't see myself getting into something like that.
