I did the exact same thing. It's that your hitting the wrong button. The webapge with "buy Portal Now" downloads Steam. You then have to open up steam and buy Portal in the Steam program. In steam it downloaded quite fast for me.



I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

It is a well respected site. It would not say that it is official lightly, and have been showing lots of evidence for it in the last two weeks without claiming that made it official. It's not on Valve's website yet though.
