Forums - Sony - Blu-ray and the PS3

Yet is the word. Sony figured well the PS2 sold so much and we want Blu ray to be the only HD format. So use the success of the PS2 by making the PS3 with a Blu ray player and kill two birds (console competition, HD competition) with one stone (PS3). If Sony wins the format War they increase their chances of winning the console war because it's the cheapest blu ray player and the PS2 crowd will see its the next step in console gaming. If they lose the format War then they lose both.

With the PS2, you get both a game console and a DVD player. Its almost the same with the PS3 and knowing sooner or later you have to go HD. Sony has a 10 year plan with the PS3 and If the Blu ray sales continue then things look bright for Sony.

Except that it would not be the cheapest blu-ray player if and when blu-ray wins the format war.  On top of that most people would prefer using a dedicated player rather than a games console for playing movies.  That might not be the case at present but that's only because blu-ray is not mainstream.  By the time blu ray is as main stream as DVD (which is never) I don't see the average family buying a PS3 as their blu ray rather than a dedicated player even if PS3 is the cheapest player.  So winning the HD disc format war is going to do very little to help their chances of winning the console war.  That doesn't even take into account the fact that at the way PS3 is tracking by the time blu ray is mainstream (if ever) it would be so far behind Wii that the console war would already be over anyway.

I'm quite amazed at how dillusional Sony fans can be.  Blu-ray has been a bad thing for PS3.  Period.  It is clearly a good thing for the HD disc war and Sony will in all probability win that.  But as a result Sony has been forced to swallow massive losses just to remain even remotely competitive in the console war.  If you feel it's better to be able to have 7.1 audio, etc than to have a high user base that will attract more developers then you are living in fantasy (sony) land.  Due to blu-ray you PS3 fans are now having to put up with games being developed primarily for 360 and ported to PS3 and you continue to dream that blu-ray is a good thing.  keep on dreaming.  one day you will wake up.

Blu-ray is the most important thing in this generation, with Networking at a close second, and Motion just behind that.

Do you really believe this?

Let's all remember how small in scale this "format war" is just yet and cool down. It's not even war yet, just bickering!
That said, I can see no way HD-DVD will be able to conquer the market, it seems like all it "supporters" have only half their wallet and heart in the game to me.

Much will depend on the big film studios, particularly Warner who are the only neutral and happen to be the biggest one. To whichever side they switch, that side will have the best chance of winning.
