The reason I ask that is because I once left my PS3 on and forgot about it during an extremely hot day in the upstairs of my home. The heat gets unbearable at times and the PS3 ended up overheating.

With the fan test people claim that the fans go berserk due to overheating, but from my experience I have found that the PS3 has an auto shutdown feature where it shuts down when the heat gets to the point where it could cause irreversible damage.

i saw a video on youtube of a guy with a white ps3. he does the test. then the system does the synonymous 3 beeps and turns off. then turns on fine afterwards. probably what you are talking about

Did he have his PS3 running prior to doing the test? I wonder how something heated up that quick. The fan test takes ~10 seconds before they kick into high gear.

Those beeps and turning off you are referring to are a part of the auto shutdown feature. That wonderful feature is how my PS3 survived 120+ degree heat.

hahah. i hear ya with the heat. i live in my attic that is redone and even with the air on if its like 90-100 outside itll hover at like 84 in my room. i dont like to game when its that hot up here, but normally im gaming at 70-80 deg. during summer up here. thats why i wanna clean it out, but i really dont know how dusty itll be and if itll be worth it.

I would personally just stick with the vacuum cleaner hose to clean it out.

If you want to open it up since your warranty it up I guess you could do that too. Just because you open it up doesn't mean Sony still won't fix it for ya if god for bid something goes wrong.

im thinking of combining compressed air and a vaccuum at the same time. hopefully the air will loosen deep dust up while the vaccuum sucks it out lol

Don't hold the can upside down, you'll freeze everything!

Sounds like a pretty solid idea though.

I haven't cleaned my PS3 out once since I bought it in December of 2006. I probably should.

oh i know the upside down compressed air too well... lets just say my brother nailed me under the pants with that when i was like 10 hahahahah

yeah i'd vaccuum yours asap. i got mine at launch but it doesnt really look like its that dusty thats why im hesitant with opening it. maybe they cleaned it out when i got the new blu ray drive.. 1.5 years ago

They always clean them out when they open them for repairs.

When I had a PS2 sent back one of the things they mentioned on the paperwork was how dirty it was.

Even though I haven't cleaned mine it still runs for ~6-8 hours a day for Netflix, gaming and watching "House: Season 3 on DVD".

Sorry to hear your brother froze you.

That stuff is crazy, could give you frost bite.

iPhone = Great gaming device. Don't agree? Who cares, because you're wrong.

Currently playing:

Final Fantasy VI (iOS), Final Fantasy: Record Keeper (iOS) & Dragon Quest V (iOS)

Got a retro room? Post it here!

yeah i prob wont open it then. ill give the compressed air/vaccuum idea a go tomorrow. if i ever get YLOD ill just open it then and try to fix it myself lol.

not worth the effort. opened mine last february, a 40gig model because the fan started to go on high because of the damn hot weather. couple it up with graphic demanding games like heavy rain and my ps3 sounds like a vaccum.

anyway, there wasn't a lot of dust in it, the fan test would do fine to blow it all out. compressed air would also do fine.

but it was a good thing i opened up my ps3, the thermal paste was almost all but dried out and kinda crumbly. since i've already opened it, i cleaned the contact points between the gpu/cpu and the heatsinks and re-applied thermal compound. now its lasts a whoe 10mins longer before the fan goes into high hahaha!

damn heat! cant wait for the rainy season
