I'd say tales, as I like that series, but the only Star Ocean I've played is 3 and I didn't like it. But it's unfair of me I think to base 1 series vs 1 game.

Not even close, Tales destroys Star Ocean. They used be pretty even way back in the SNES/PS1 days imo, but now it's no contest.
