Forums - Gaming - I figured out why FF12 sucked!

At first it feels Vaan is the main character but once you get all the characters the story has much less focus on him. Plus you can switch him out of the party and leave him there :D

The story was boring and once you figured out the gambit system, you don't even play really. You simply walk and talk to people.

4 ≈ One

FFXII was one of the worst in the series. Story was Weak, Characters were dull, and the gameplay was slow as hell. A huge step down from FFX and it ultimately ruined the series for me

That's the biggest misconception about FFXII.

You did not have to play with the gambits system on. It wasn't forced. IT was your choice to play with it turned on. If the gambit system bored you, or robbed you from control, why not switch it off and give your own commands?

Heck, I never used the gambit system after the forced part in the Dalmasca Sewers, and I did the game 100%.

In the end, people who complain about the gambit system are complaining about their own lazyness.

oooooo gawd... so your that shallow that reason FFXll sucked was because of its story that didnt? What about the rest the amazing game? even if you didnt like the story there was so much there no true JRPG fans could turn down

Its really sad FF12 takes this kind heat... it is one of poster child sof what a JRPG should be.

FFXII has its problems but the good managed to outweigh the bad IMO. The combat system, gambit system, and costumization are excellent even if the game forces you to grind for levels, LP, and gil. The story is a pretty intriguing one and is a good change of pace from the more personal storytelling that is usual in FF even if the pacing could really be improved and some of the characters are undercooked. I never finished FFXII but I played the game for 40 hours so that seems like ample time to come up with a concrete opinion. It is a very well designed game overall.

The reason why the game sucked is becaus you did not feel enpowered as you were playing through the game, the scenario left you as if you were just a part on the side of the story and not as important as previous ffs. You also felt as if you were not doing much in the fight, just running around and waiting for your gambits to activate.

Aftr doing lots of research I summarized in pargrph below:

It stems from Squenix dumbing down Yasumi Matsuno's dark fantasy, realistic medieval world. Final Fantasy Tactics (although the ending turned into generic Final Fantasy KILL GOD! drivel) and Vagrant Story were masterpieces in story telling and didn't fall under the trap of the average JRPG where it must star a plucky teenager who fights against fallen deities while discovering the meaning of friendship or whatever. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance wasn't meant to be canon but Squenix realized the sudden appeal and monetary grab bag of a colorful world full of lizard-men and cat-girls and immediately set about to raping Matsuno's universe.

The biggest crime of Final Fantasy XII is Squenix's meddling. They wanted to remove Basch and Ashe as main characters and add Vaan and Penelo because Japanese gamers apparently don't like anyone who's older than 20 in the lead role. Matsuno said "You know what? Fuck you guys!" and left the company. When questioned he stated that he was "annoyed" by Squenix, their meddling, and the way the game was being handled. Indeed the game's biggest delay was because, while 3/4 finished, they had to add in two new characters to please the shitty test audiences.

What could have been a gripping story in the same vein as Tactics and Vagrant story was ruined by corporate meddling. The end result felt incredibly childish. Faint glimmers of hope poked through but ultimately the game has a terrible story to gameplay ratio. You'll receive this massive chunk of exposition followed by 20 hours of walking through huge fields filled with a gauntlet of monsters. Every area feels like a massive filler and the game could have been completely cut in half and still have the story remain intact.

_____

it is corprate meddling tht killed its potential. companies shud let game makers do wht they wnt to do, not force them to do sumthing they dnt want to do like wht hppnd with Infinity Ward.

You should check out Tactics Ogre.  Which was a Matsuno game... it was about... a plucky teenager, fighting against monsters and fallen deities.

I doubt that was the exact reason.

Matsuno himself has been dumbing down his work since the Ogre Battle series to better fit consumers.  He's said as much.  He definitly had problems with square... but he wasn't beyond "dumbing down" his work... as he'd been consiously doing it for a while.

Storywise FF Tactics is a dumbed down Tactics Ogre.

With the Advanced series even further simplyfying the plots... though without "dumbing" it down and just shifting targets.

I thought ff12 was a great game.  Not my favorite Final fantasy but I find it hard to dislike a final fantasy game. I thought the gambit system was alright played the whole game that way. If i played the game again i would turn gambit system off and see if its any different.  I rarely used espers, techniks and quickenings. Didn't find them useful with the gambit system. I think turning off gambit system would allow me to use espers, techniks or quickenings more not sure but if i play it again i guess i'll find out.  I found in some battles keeping my MP full was more important than a super attack(espers/quickenings). Usually had one healer at all times. If the healer's MP is empty I was dead meat. Didn't feel like using an esper or quickening was beneficial during most battles(drains MP).

I personally don't think there was a main character of the story. I think the story was more about what was going on in world than the characters. The characters personal stories seemed like small side notes to the bigger story. Characters weren't really developed like other final fantasy's. Which was disappointing. Too many male characters that looked female. May be a reason why some dislike the characters. Its ok to have one character thats a fruit cake but not everyone. The list of fruity male characters, vaan,  larsa, reks, al-cid and in some countries vayne. Balthier i didn't mind.  The judges though are some of the coolest looking characters in all of the final fantasies. I enjoyed the game.
