Forums - Gaming - Game development costs: Reggie says...

Most of the cost to make a PS3/Xbox360/PC game comes from the graphics. Graphics designers are paid much more than, say programmers and the systems required to produce and edit them are very expensive. Development time isn't that important when you're not exactly high-end on the graphics front.

PS: AI takes its toll too.

Twilight Princess cost more then $10 million and I am pretty sure Mario Galaxy cost much more then $10 million.
But Twilight Princess was also in development for like 8 years?

Well, more like 4 years, but yeah a very long time.  Especially for a Gamecube game.

For those who doubt the $50 Million number consider that Metal Gear Solid 4 has a development team of 200 people and will have been in development for 2.5 to 3 years before being released; if you assume $100,000 for all expenses (including software, benefits and office space) per year for every employee you end up with a budget of $50 Million to $60 Million without including marketing costs.

My estimate is (certainly) rough, and MGS may be in the $30 to $40 Million range (without marketing) but Reggie's estimate is not unreaistic for some games this generation.

^^^Oh good heaven don't bring facts and figures here squirrel, didn't you learn what happens when you did that last time :P.

I'm not really sure why there is so much shock here. These are pretty standard figures we've heard before or can easily infere as squirrel has. As pointed out Reggie is stating the range (while probably lowballing the high end Wii figure which I suspect is more like $15 million) and not the frequency. It can be argued that not many PS360 3rd party games are in the most expensive end of the range but then aside from Red Steel what 3rd party Wii game has even come close to $10 million?

There is no getting around the fact that the cost of developing a game on the PS360 is much much higher than it was last gen or is on the Wii.

Wii games cost a little more. Developing a game for Wii might cost $5 million to $10 million, including all of the marketing costs.

By contrast, developing a game for the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 can cost $20 million to $50 million, Fils-Aime asserted. As a result, a developer needs to sell 1.3 million to 1.5 million copies of a game to turn a profit, he argued.

I think some people are missing the fact that he is using words like "might" and "can" instead of absolutes.

Just the Launch budget itself for Halo 3 cost MS $50 million. A quote from a guest speaker from MS marketing division in my marketing class at my university.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials

Regarding Killzone 2, the production cost is currently only $20 million. Apparently it's the most expensive entertainment project in Dutch history.

The wii is old tech, it is a super charged Gamecube, the cost of making an average game is going to be cheaper then PS3/360. But it only cost 26mil USD to make a 360/PS3 game, this was said by a major game developer. Porting it to the PC is also very cheap. Reggie is just upset that no one is making major games for the weak system that is the wii.

Nintendo is also keeping all the Disc's for Nintendo made games and limiting them for third parties, this has been said by more then one developer. Nintendo is also not liked by many companies that make games.

Your post is such an incredible combination of parroting things you've read before mixed with flat-out blind idiocy that it makes me dissapointed that my printer cannot print onto toilet paper, so that I could wipe my ass with it.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

Everything i said is the truth, if you can name one thing i said that is incorrect then post about it.

The wii is a supercharged GC, the wii is based on GC tech and blown up. This was Nintendo's plan to keep games cheap and easy to make. Nintendo is also having a hard time making enough Disc's and they said they would place the disc's on games that sell the most, and thats Nintendo made games. I'm also pretty sure it was ubisoft that said it cost 24.6-26mil USD to make a 360/PS3 game.

The wii is also not getting all the big games, Assasains creed and CoD4 are not on the wii, along with many other games.
