im new to ati cards.... i dont wanna spend a shitload... should i go with the 5770 or a 5800? dont wanna spend more than 250

The 5850 is a whole lot faster than the 5770. Just google "5850 HD benchmark" and you can see for yourself the difference & if you are willing to pay for it.

just got the radeon 5770 along with a custom made new PC. will upgrade to the 5850 later on but imo from the specs it'd be overkill for the main games i want to play.

go with the Ati Radeon 5770. cheap, powerful, and most of all low energy draw, means less ele bill cost.

Oo tough choice:

As you can see, sometimes you get an improvement, sometimes not. Have a look around as other benchmarks may give other stories, but it looks like because of only 16 ROPS (same as 5770, half as many as the 5850) there's only a minimal improvement of frames, putting you inbetween the GTX260 and GTX275 but with DX11.

Honestly, if I was in your shoes, if you are earning cash, hold out for a few months for the 5850 as you can get up to 20 frames more. If not, save a bit by getting the 5770.

http://www.legionhardware.com/articles_pages/ati_radeon_hd_5770_crossfire_performance,1.html

For other than a few games which clearly have't been optimised for crossfire, two 5770's gives generally better performance than the 5850 and even the 5870. Really just depends how much you want to spend as two cards needs a crossfire motherboard and probably a 600W PSU.

COngratulations on ignoring ALL my points.

1. How are FPS' all lame, as you claimed they were? If not all, then please, how is Shattered Horizon lame? Frankly the fact you are clearly passing judgements on games you've never played the term 'lame' just shows the level of intelligence in your argument.

2. Which part of "THE CARDS CANNOT HANDLE 3 MONITORS AT ONCE AT 60 FPS" did you not understand? That's a VERY good reason against it, and the fact that on a lot of RTS, because of camera posistion, you get a very distored view which is of no benefit to the player. Go do your research.

3. Yes there are performance reasons you can't use it in every game. Seriously, go try playing Shattered Horizon, and then come back to me as clearly you are arguing from a point of total ignorance, not to mention it really doesn't work for a lot of games.

4. There is no shame in turning things down, but you would have to turn a lot of things OFF to get 60 FPS in many games. That takes away from the immersion of the game and eyefinity as the game now looks like jizz.

5. Seriously kid, go and play some PC exclusives and look up benchmarks for eyefinity and reviews of it - it's a good idea, but the chips just can't handle it.

1. Well they are lame and boring to me. I maybe play one FPS game a year, two if Valve releases a Half-Life game.

2. There are very few games which cannot be run on 3 monitors at 60FPS for performance reasons.

3. So you make a list of maybe 3 or 4 newer titles which are too demanding to run at 60FPS on 3 monitors? How not very convincing of you.

4. Turn a lot of things off? 99% of all Vista compatible games are capable of being played at 60FPS with maxed settings on an Eyefinity setup. Why focus on the 1%?

5. I play PC exclusives all the time, multiplatforms and theres seriously no difference. My HD 5870 owns every game I throw at it. The 85 FPS counter on STALKER: COP is testament to this.

Tease.

1. Yes, we have established you find them lame & boring, what I'm asking is why as you are arguing with all the intellectual capacity of an ignorant 14 year old.

2. There are a good amount of games which cannot run at 60 FPS maxed out

3. You are also ignoring the games which don't work with eyefinity because of either no patch or they simply weren't designed for it e.g. Dawn of War 2.

4. Why focus on the 1%? Because that 1% tends to be the best offering of that genre. DoW 2 is one of the best RTS out there, Shatter Horizon is maybe the best FPS for competitive play, with BF:BC2 being the arcade rival and neither of those could be played across 3 screens at 60FPS close ot being maxed out.

5. Oh dear, don't be a politician and bend the truth. The 85FPS you are getting is due to the fact you are playing it on either a low resolution and/or with many, many features turned down or off, unless you have some kind of anomalously powerful HD5870 which is better than all others that have been benchmarked.

Seriously, point 5 shows how you are now just being arrogant and willing to bullsh*t. If you are having to knock graphics down a hell of a lot (which you have to do) to play the best games on eyefinity, is it really needed? I mean the card doesn't give you a constant 60FPS at 1920x1080 for some games let alon across three monitors, and with games only getting more demanding, and with DX11, the list of games which won't be playable even close to maxed out on eyefinity will only grow.

Shattered Horizon is a bought-and-paid-for Nvidia game. It uses PhysX to an extent that cripples the experience on AMD cards. It uses DX10 because that was the highest DX level Nvidia supported, though DX10.1 was two years old at the time (AMD 3xxx, 4xxx and 5xxx) and DX11 was two months old (AMD 5xxx).

good thread; will have to look at this further later
