The 5850 is a whole lot faster than the 5770. Just google "5850 HD benchmark" and you can see for yourself the difference & if you are willing to pay for it.

As you can see, sometimes you get an improvement, sometimes not. Have a look around as other benchmarks may give other stories, but it looks like because of only 16 ROPS (same as 5770, half as many as the 5850) there's only a minimal improvement of frames, putting you inbetween the GTX260 and GTX275 but with DX11.
Honestly, if I was in your shoes, if you are earning cash, hold out for a few months for the 5850 as you can get up to 20 frames more. If not, save a bit by getting the 5770.

actually i am not upgrading right this minute. i amw waiting till late june early july. just in time for SC2. my comp was built in 2006 lol. so hopefully price goes down somewhat!

For other than a few games which clearly have't been optimised for crossfire, two 5770's gives generally better performance than the 5850 and even the 5870. Really just depends how much you want to spend as two cards needs a crossfire motherboard and probably a 600W PSU.
