Forums - Gaming - Before we would just disagree, but now we hate each other.

Brief summary in bold at the end

In class today, we discussed how the media and such has taken out the gray area when it comes to people whose opinions conflict.

For example, in the American government, you have Republicans and Democrats. I'm not into politics, but recently there was a bill passed that didn't have a single Republican vote. When people made speeches in a room with Repubs and Democs, half the room would stand up and applaud while the other half sat down. The speaker could've said he was giving everyone in the room ice cream and the opposing party would not break a smirk.

Right now, I think this is what gaming is like, and it is very dangerous. When I was kid (y'know 2 weeks ago) I had an SNES, but I would go to my friends house and play the Sega Saturn and Genesis. Right before dinner, I would go to my neighbor's and play Playstation. No one console was a 'pussy' console or a retard box.

Last gen, the 'kiddy' pot began brewing to critical mass (it was there in the SNES era, but only briefly I suppose, N64 negated that....and was as ill as it gets!) and the Gamecube was the baby lunchbox.

Now with the Wii vs HD BS, not only do the gamers verbally brutalize each other, but they have become extremely elitst and unaccepting to several genres of gaming. This is the whole reason why gaming is dying/shrinking despite what rabid guntards may tell you.

I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I want you to really think about it.....now people are forced to pick a side. All the progress the PS2 made to making videogames acceptable to all has been thrown out the window. The Wii tried, but still this console fails to cater to the market of existing gamers along with new ones. Sure, there are "core/traditional" on the Wii but Nintendo unforunately misrepresented how the console's games as a whole are meant to be played. In Ninty commercials, either you have teens waggling like crazy (does not help the Wii's image at all) or people smiling in bright colored rooms and constantly smiling. It would be a relief to have somebody focused at least somewhat on a game, or an 80s type commercial (if it worked for the NES, it would work for the Wii) but the commercials are constantly the same, and it typecasts the Wii gamer into a Joker-from-the-Batman happyfaced looney tune.

*breathes*

Mind you, It has worked for Nintendo in sales, but at the same time still leave a considerable amount of people out (oh my poor brothers).

But then you have the Xbox or Sony commercial, which is the complete opposite. Despite how witty or clever or whatever the hell kind of "The Office" humor the Dear Sony thing applies to games, (GOW3 commercial) is shows gamers struggling or getting a little too into it somehow, turning people off. There is no balance between these damn marketing schemes. Either you are frantically waggling or ignoring your girlfriend to rip off a minotaur's head.

Combined, these things force gaming to once again be limited into the shadows. With girls around, you can't talk about playing Xbox360 (at least I can't) and in front of other guys you can't talk about the Wii. So with gaming going back in the closet (yea the Wii aint the only thing in there anymore) gamers are receding back into the basement. Bad enough that you got money causing extreme problems (Bungie-Activision-Infinty Ward butthump triangle anyone?) but costs keep climbing, sequels keep churning, studios keep closing, and genres keep narrowing.

Now that I have to pick a side.....I'll choose the

naa console wars have been going on forever basically since the begging of the multitude of different pong players.

remember when you were a kid and your parents bought you a bike and you always compared it to your friends bike thinking that nothing was superior to your bike , it was the best, but as you got older you realized that your bike was realistically a piece of shit. Its really no different from when we were children , we fought over stupid things because we hated feeling less of what our egos and parents made us think to believe.

i remember fighting with my cousins cause i owned a sega and they had a super nintendo , it was always back and forth , when in reality it was the games that made it great.

if you had the best of all worlds that was available to you, only than can you realistically make a non biased judgment, same thing with government , if you had all the information and experience of all the different parties only then can you look at each side and decide what makes it true to you, the only real opinion that matters is your own but the truth is only seen when you experience everything and talk less from assumption.

well me and friends play anything, we don't care if its kiddy or looks gay as long as its fun.

with girls or no girls i talk about what i like.

also note that girls aren't angels sent from heaven's , they're human, they're like you have hobbies and have weaknesses ,  the more you get shy about it the worse it gets.

Feel sorry for you that you are surrounded with such people that would judge you based on what you do in your free time. I don't have this problem.

I think you're over-representing it, at least at this point. Wii can still have sway with the guys, it depends on software.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

@OP
Don't worry about. Yes your right, yes it's damaging, but the truth is it's also the standard way things work. The Wii is a movement. This movement will eventually wipe out the hate groups. Leaving the newer gamers and adaptable gamers. Not the static gamers who tend to die out due to inability to adapt.

The movement has started in all areas. I would suggest make your piece with your old stone gaming friends because in the next two generations they will be effectivly the old man with tales that no one listens too.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

Actually I talk to a couple of girls I know about 360 stuff from time to time, just never Halo or Gears, usually Mass Effect and Fable.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

This seems pretty exaggerated. Are there really that many guys that look down on the Wii? The only ones I know of are teenagers (probably still obsessed with their image).

As for girls with the other consoles, it isn't that bad either. Perhaps you can't talk about CoD or some other HD game with them, but it's not like you could in the PS2 era either, so at worst, nothing has changed. At best, there's at least a new console that some girls are willing to play...

edit: I did find the commercial bit funny, though. I think the Microsoft commercials are neutral, but the Nintendo / Sony ones really do seem to appeal to the different extreme ends.
