Brief summary in bold at the end
In class today, we discussed how the media and such has taken out the gray area when it comes to people whose opinions conflict.
For example, in the American government, you have Republicans and Democrats. I'm not into politics, but recently there was a bill passed that didn't have a single Republican vote. When people made speeches in a room with Repubs and Democs, half the room would stand up and applaud while the other half sat down. The speaker could've said he was giving everyone in the room ice cream and the opposing party would not break a smirk.
Right now, I think this is what gaming is like, and it is very dangerous. When I was kid (y'know 2 weeks ago) I had an SNES, but I would go to my friends house and play the Sega Saturn and Genesis. Right before dinner, I would go to my neighbor's and play Playstation. No one console was a 'pussy' console or a retard box.
Last gen, the 'kiddy' pot began brewing to critical mass (it was there in the SNES era, but only briefly I suppose, N64 negated that....and was as ill as it gets!) and the Gamecube was the baby lunchbox.
Now with the Wii vs HD BS, not only do the gamers verbally brutalize each other, but they have become extremely elitst and unaccepting to several genres of gaming. This is the whole reason why gaming is dying/shrinking despite what rabid guntards may tell you.
I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I want you to really think about it.....now people are forced to pick a side. All the progress the PS2 made to making videogames acceptable to all has been thrown out the window. The Wii tried, but still this console fails to cater to the market of existing gamers along with new ones. Sure, there are "core/traditional" on the Wii but Nintendo unforunately misrepresented how the console's games as a whole are meant to be played. In Ninty commercials, either you have teens waggling like crazy (does not help the Wii's image at all) or people smiling in bright colored rooms and constantly smiling. It would be a relief to have somebody focused at least somewhat on a game, or an 80s type commercial (if it worked for the NES, it would work for the Wii) but the commercials are constantly the same, and it typecasts the Wii gamer into a Joker-from-the-Batman happyfaced looney tune.
*breathes*
Mind you, It has worked for Nintendo in sales, but at the same time still leave a considerable amount of people out (oh my poor brothers).
But then you have the Xbox or Sony commercial, which is the complete opposite. Despite how witty or clever or whatever the hell kind of "The Office" humor the Dear Sony thing applies to games, (GOW3 commercial) is shows gamers struggling or getting a little too into it somehow, turning people off. There is no balance between these damn marketing schemes. Either you are frantically waggling or ignoring your girlfriend to rip off a minotaur's head.
Combined, these things force gaming to once again be limited into the shadows. With girls around, you can't talk about playing Xbox360 (at least I can't) and in front of other guys you can't talk about the Wii. So with gaming going back in the closet (yea the Wii aint the only thing in there anymore) gamers are receding back into the basement. Bad enough that you got money causing extreme problems (Bungie-Activision-Infinty Ward butthump triangle anyone?) but costs keep climbing, sequels keep churning, studios keep closing, and genres keep narrowing.
Now that I have to pick a side.....I'll choose the
