I like how they actually address this in Lost Odyssey.

you mean the going into houses and taking stuff?

Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman also made fun of JRPG heroes a lot

I mean how if you talked to anyone in their houses they were always like "Listen I have too much junk - if you see any lying around, just take it"

They did the same thing in Dragon Quest VIII in the starter town.  With a book you read on a shelf telling you to look for Treasure Chests and other goods and then it goes on with something to the effect of '...why are they there?  Who cares!  Just take what you can find and thank the goddess!'

Frankly, I find going into peoples houses and breaking pots/checking tresure chests/hanging bags/cuboards to be the most addicting and fun part of Dragon Quest games.  And I wish more RPGs would do it.  I've even found myself going back and playing other RPGs like Suikoden and FInal Fantasy and checking all the cuboards and pots in peoples houses and there will be nothing...but I just do it out of habit.  Amazingly enough, in FFVI, there IS stuff in pots and barrels...but only a VERY small amount of them.  Like 1% of them.

If you haven't you should play Fallout3/Oblivion because there is tons of crap in houses to search and take.

I'm thinking about getting Fallout 3 for that very reason.  But in terms of 'loot', Diablo has that covered.  There's more than enough breaking pots and raiding treasure chests in that series to last a lifetime.  And Diablo III is coming....

Six upcoming games you should look into:
