We’ve had word off the record that the PS3 should, at some point, get background downloading for game patches. One of my few personal issues with the PS3 (and indeed modern gaming in general) is that every time the developers patch a game you need to sit and wait for the new version to download before you can play online. However, if our source is to be believed, this could change.

Naturally, Sony aren’t commenting on this one, and we do have to stress that this is very much a rumour at this point as TheSixthAxis cannot verify the information but if the PS3 can figure out which games you own (or at least, have played recently) and automatically grab the latest patches in the background whilst you play another game then this would make at least one person very happy indeed.

Potentially rather brilliant – so how do you feel about this?

Anyone think this could be true?

I don't know why it wouldn't be possible (and why it hasn't already been implemented). I'm sure there would still be a chance that you might have to wait for a particular game to update but this kind of feature should make it less likely to happen.

That would kick ass. It's not in my list of "I want this!!!"
but it would be a cool feature...until it becomes self-aware.

yeah it's one of the main annoyances, having to wait to play, while it could be downloaded and installed in background

Most game patches are there to fix bugs and glitches that other people may be taking advantage of. The reason you have to update before you play is for this reason.

Also, what's the deal with the updates taking so long on PS3? They only take like 5-10 seconds total to download and install on XBL.

They did something very similar to this with Everquest 2 (part of the update would download and install while playing the game). Worked great there so in theory it would work great here.
