Supreme Court Accepts Free Speech Challenge to Ban on Violent Video Games

The U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to decide whether California’s ban on the sale and rental of violent video games to minors violates the First Amendment. The court granted cert today, according to stories in Reuters, Bloomberg and the Associated Press. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had overturned the law, saying the state did not produce enough evidence showing the harmful effects of the games. California contends the state can regulate violent videos to protect minors, just as it can regulate sexual materials to protect children. T

I think the law will stand but who knows.

I predict 8-1 against California, with Alito dissenting. Maybe 7-2 with Alito and Thomas dissenting, but I doubt it. That's as far as this assault on freedom goes.

That's a stupid ban.

Since the game industry has a rating system similar to movies, if rated 'R' movie is allowed to be sold to anyone, then a rated 'M' game should be allowed to sell to anyone.

At most there could be a law not allowing sale of these ratings to minors.

Edit: Just realized the OP did state 'to minors' then as far as I'm concerned the rating system should be upheld accross the board. If 'M' games cannot be sold to minors, then niether should 'R' movies etc.
