Forums - General - When HD Looks Bad

I was watching 'Saving Private Ryan' in crystal clear HDTV this weekend. Technically it was spectacular. From the perspective of the experience of immersion into the movie it was terrible. The HDness was so good that it was also extremely clear and obvious that it was all happening on a back lot movie set. It was so real that it made me accutely aware of its unreality. For movies where you want to be transported into the time, place and situation the accentuation of the fakeness of the set on which the movie is taking place reduces the enjoyment of the movie.

It seems that pre-HD movies really should be watched in sub-HD or at least low HD. I'm certain that HD produced movies don't suffer from this problem.

It was so good that it looked fake? That's a good quality hdtv you have there. It's awesomeness circled the spectrum and landed on the other side. That's like being so pretty that people can't stand to look at you. :p

Odd that you would think that, being very little, if any, of the movie was shot in a back lot movie set

I admit I didn't watch from start to finish because I only got to the house where I watched it when the final chapter was playing, which is where all the back lot (or other movie set construction set up) filming would have happened. Obviously all the stuff shot on location at Omaha Beach for instance is the real deal (i.e. not a fake beach) and would look the part.

I think it adds to the charm, especially with legacy films, seeing those imperfections.

Wizard of Oz is the same way in HD. I don't think it looks bad, especially considering how old the movie is

The Tiger tank in the end must look Horrible lol

The way it was shot using that grainy retro look I'm not surprised it doesn't look that good in HD the same probably also holds true with Death Proof and Planted Terror.  Also it isn't the best looking movie on DVD in SD either.

wow, you just reminded me I still havn't seen this movie...

Yeah, HD loves bringing out the flaws in things.

But that is good, not bad.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
