Forums - Gaming - What game(s) this gen literally "shocked" you?

I'll add Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, it was the first FPS that I really got into and played like crazy online.

Oblivion was the most immersive RPG I had played up till that point, and besides HEAVY RAIN, is my most immersive experience to date. It's still my top RPG of all time and one of my top games of all time, not to mention the "shock" factor came from the content and fun factor. I never expected to enjoy it that much.

I'm assuming you haven't played Morrowind, because Oblivion was a major down grade in the immersion department. Sure, it may be technically a better "game", but it is in no way a better "experience" than Morrowind.
However, my biggest shocks would probably be Company of Heroes

Dragon Age: Origins

F.E.A.R 2 (especially since I'm not fond of traditional FPSs)

Farcry 2

Mass Effect

Mirror's Edge

Mount and Blade (one of my favorite games of all time, despite the Dreamcast level graphics)

Yakuza 3

Portal (the only game I have ever played that was 100% flawless)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat (my pick for the most immersive game of all time)

Well that's it I guess.

It doesn't really count, but since I played it for the first time recently, Sands of Time really impressed me, enough to be my favorite game of all time.

Played Morrowind, didn't enjoy it even remotely as much as Oblivion. That's not to take anything from it, it just wasn't as enjoyable for me.

I guess it depends on what type of gamer you are. I classify gamers into three main groups.

Gameplay gamers - The kind of people that don't care much about story, and only care about the core game mechanics. (Counter-Strike/Modern Warfare players).

Story gamers - Care little for gameplay and technical flaws, as long as the game has a good story (FF players, not saying that the FF gameplay sucks, it's just typical of FF fans to overlook glaring flaws).

Experience gamers - Care little for story and gameplay as long as they can be fully immersed in a world that it well constructed and cohesive, even if the actual plot of the world is somewhat bland, or the gameplay isn't that great (Morrwind/ Mount and Blade fans).

I am a 100% an experience gamer, so Morrowind is directed at me, whereas you seem like a cross between all three, so Oblivion is marketed towards you.

I could claim that you just didn't like Morrowind because it was too smart for you and Oblivion was dumbed down for consoles, but I've fought that battle before, and you seem like an intelligent person anyway.

I played Morrowind on PC.

The effect remains. I've seen many console gamers play PC games and not like them, simply because they were too difficult/complex.

I originally played it on X-box anyway (basically spent a month at my friend's house to play it, as I never owned the original X-box). I then bought it on the PC about 8 years later (I've actually got a funny story about buying Morrowind, but that's a tale for another time).

It was just a joke anyway, anytime I get into a console vs. PC fanboy war (just for the lols) I pull that out of my bag of fanboy insults.

I really have nothing against console gamers, I just like to mess with their heads a little sometimes, especially the stupid ones.

inFamous, MAG and Killzone 2. Everything else has been up to what I expected or disappointing.

How did I forget Demon's Souls and GoW3?

4 ≈ One

MGS4 shocked me with how much I actually cared about the characters. I never felt so invested in characters in a non RPG game before.

Bioshock shocked me by being every bit as good as I was told. I thought I would be let down for sure.

Flower shocked me cause of how addictive it was.

Wii Sports shocked me most of all. I never in a million years thought it could be as fun as it was. But that Wii Tennis on there......Oh boy I love it to death. And it is decptively complex.

I am a gamer. Not a fanboy, not a troll, a gamer. So when you dont like what I have to say, remember this fact.

inFamous (did anybody beat me to that one?)

Seriously, though, there are a few:

1) Braid. Yes, I'd heard about it being artistic and beautiful and all of that, but...wow. I could never have imagined what an incredible experience Braid is. My favourite game on the PS Network by a LONG way.

2) Assassin's Creed II. I didn't really like the original, and I thought "Meh, ACII is probably the same game, but in Italy". How wrong I was. Fantastic game; probably the biggest improvement I've seen this gen.

3) Resistance: Fall of Man. Now, this is an odd one. I played Resistance 2 first, and I thought it was repetitive, derivative and generally extremely dull. Then I saw RFOM on sale (Very few games don't warrant £5), and bought it. I am now convinced that R2 is the biggest series-ruiner this gen. The original had its fair share of flaws, but it dared to be slightly innovative, to challenge FPS norms- a weapon wheel instead of two weapons. Non-regenerating health. A different control scheme. On top of that, the story made some sort of sense. Not a fantastic game, but far better than I ever expected it to be.

4) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. I wasn't really an FPS gamer before this gen, and I wondered what all the fuss with CoD4 was about. I found out the moment I started to play the game. Probably the best pure FPS I've ever played.

5) LittleBigPlanet. Yes, I had more faith in this than most people, but I still underestimated it. In fact, even after I'd started playing, I thought it was decent at best. It was only an hour or so into the game, when it started to pick up, that I began to love it.

6) Prince of Persia (2008): This looked over-simplistic and ridiculous. But while it was a bit shallow, it was certainly enjoyable.

7) Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty. The reviews for this were pretty lackluster, and I can't figure out why. Yes, it was short, but it's a PSN game! The focus on platforming was a nice break from traditional R&C games, and it came together very well, even if it was over too quickly.

8) Prototype. Again, pretty average reviews. Looked one-dimensional and repetitive. Finally received it as a gift, and loved it. There are some joys in gaming- ninja-kicking helicopters, slashing pedestrians in half with a blade, soaring over rooftops before landing on the ground and shooting spikes everywhere, that are all too rare in gaming. I'll admit, this had some pretty terrible design, but the fun factor more than made up for it.

EDIT: These aren't my favourite games of the gen, not by a long shot (well, some of them are, but not all). But games like Uncharted 1 and 2, MGS4, GoW3 and BioShock, I knew would be fantastic, and they didn't disappoint, but I expected nothing less.

Yes :p

OT: Although I said InFamous as a joke earlier, it's still in my top most shocking game this gen.

Games that shocked me in the sense that they were better than I thought. Uncharted 2, LittleBigPlanet, and Oblivion.

i would say:

heavenly sword
call of duty 4
killzone 2
ufc undisputed
uncharted 2
god of war3
