Sony currently sell the PS3 at a loss, this revision enables them to sell the PS3 at break-even and even profit depending on some boring currency stuff. The reason you, the consumer, pays the same is so that Sony stop losing money in the PlayStation division.

I think that refers to the US, the only place where the price of the PS3 is, and is staying, 299 US Dollars, as stated.
The yen has been very strong against the dollar the past 4 years, so that sales made in US dollars net Sony fewer yen in income from each sale. Like CGI, I also believe that overall and when considering all regions and sales combined, Sony probably pulls even or is mildly profitable on HW unit sales at this moment. It's probably close, though, whichever way it comes out. Any revisions will help significantly, obviously.
