A lot of people get a free day off from work to shop for Christmas. = a lot of sales.
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, typically known as the biggest sales day of the year.
In such, its called "BLACK" Friday because sales are all POSITIVE, as opposed to RED.
Other great notes are BLACK WEDNESDAY
The busiest drinking day of the year in the USA is the day before Thanksgiving.
Not St. Patty's Day, or Cinco De Mayo, or New Year's.
Black Wednesday is so non-denominational, that just about everyone has off the day before Thanksgiving, therefore, bars have the best business the day before.
And that's not just bars.
The busiest day for Pizza Vendors... ALSO BLACK WEDNESDAY.

It's the day of the year where most people looking for good deals, especially in electronics, start lining up 12-48 hours ahead of time. And when the door opens, they shove and push and people get trampled over and people end up waiting 2+ hours just to line up to pay. I think sooner or later, the black will have a different meaning. :P Personally, I don't think it's worth few hundred dollars to wait 12+ hours in the cold.

Usuaully the sales are only Friday but this year they seemed to stretch into Saturday and even Sunday. With many follow up sales for the next week.
I guess most don't understand black friday.... It has nothing to do with mood and such. It has to do with retailers, many of whom are losing money all year (in the "red" as in red ink on an accounting ledger) shift to being in the "black" as they are now finally turning the corner on profitability for the year... The day after thanksgiving and the following days until the end of the year are the only time when many retailers make a significant amount of money...

It is because this is the day that has the most night according to wiccan calendars. So, as tradition has it when the great wiccan king of Golan came in 1473 BC and killed off 100,000's of people it was on this day, Friday. Thus, Black Friday.
The whole retailer thing is just an urban myth. Mine is factually based in a pre-historical oral tradition made up on the spot.
