Forums - General - Have you seen Sparatcus: Blood and Sand yet?

Bumping the thread up.

I'm wondering if Mafoo ever got to other episodes. I'm up to 9 or 10, and it keeps getting better and better.

Well, just watched the first 20 minutes of the series. Not really working for me. The acting is not that great, and the dialog sucks. The opening saying this is to depict real like actions is laughable.

But, I will give it a few episodes and see if I like it. So far, True Blood and Dexter have more violence. Less sex however, and I do like sex :)

I hated the pilot, and didn't think much of ep 2 & 3. I think Spartacus' wife is one of the worst actresses I've ever seen. It really starts to pick up though and the finale is great. The over the top blood is reduced to more realistic amounts as the season continues.

OT: Prefer Rome personally, but it got very good towards the end. The finale is epic. And with such amazingly elegant lines such as

"The gods see fit to spread cheeks and ram cock up f*cking arse"

I can't wait for the next season.

Darn... where do those writers come up with this stuff?

"I don't understand how someone could like Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, but not like Twilight!!!"

"Last book I read was Brokeback Mountain, I just don't have the patience for them unless it's softcore porn."

(The Voice of a Generation and Seece)

"If you cant stand the sound of your own voice than dont become a singer !!!!!"

                                                                               (pizzahut451)

I heard about this show from a friend
don't know how I could watch it online though.

Yep. Anything with Netflix can view it for free.

Alternately, you can download Starz On Demand software and watch it on your PC, but I am unsure what cost it is.

Never heard of this before. I have to check it out since I love historical epics and drama. I hope it comes to Sweden.

I don't like this new trend of over the top foul language and nudity in historical movies and series. Like Deadwood, I hated it. It tries to be so badass, but it's just unrealistic that they would talk and behave like that in ancient times.

So I thought I was gonna hate "300" but I absolutely loved it. Same with the movie Alexander, it was pretty good.

"Rome", the TV series was fair. Bad acting in general. Not much warfare or epic scenery. Why it cost so much to produce??

"The Tudors", simply incredible. Acting, footage, atmosphere, settings, costumes, everything is awesome.

I am glad they're making these historical series. Will be interesting to watch Spartacus.

Based on that trailer it looks like Spartacus is to 300 what Band of Brothers was to Saving Private Ryan. Looks great.

Yeah. The show is about as gritty and wrong as it could be.

If 50% of what they portray was historically correct (and the opening statement says that the copious amounts of violence and sex are for historical accuracy), then Rome was beyond the most deplorable place in history. The show depicts slavery in its worst elements - random beatings, murder, rape, and the deception that was given to some in the idea they could obtain freedom.

It also has a lot of complexity to how Romans handled politics. That is, that they were always trying to blackmail and betray friend and foe for coin or status. You owe someone debts? Find a way to get them murdered. Someone knows a deep dark secret about you? Manufacture something far worse, and blackmail them with it. it really shows the depravity of the Roman culture. To that end, it justifies a lot of what it portrays..It serves as a nice sequel to 300 in the dissertation of ancient culture - showing that there is rarely an act that goes on today that didn't exist back then.

Other than 2 people in the show - Spartacus and Doctore, everyone has a really evil side. Even Sparty is pretty nasty with how he wants to deal with things. You wind up hoping for all the villans to die at some point in the show, only to see them get richer and more mad with power. Even some of the good guys (like Varro) have their evil sides like 'Oh, I'm a familyman, but I'm going to buy prostitutes because my wife got raped so this will make us even'.

So yeah, its a crazy show. Very good, though. I really liked the first episode, which some disliked, so it only got better for me. And having read about the historical Sparticus makes me think that when Andy recovers from Lymphoma, that the series will go in new and great directions.
