Forums - General - Have you seen Sparatcus: Blood and Sand yet?

Possibly the most epic and best new series of 2010.

If you are American, and have Netflix on your video game system, like I do with my 360, you owe it to yourself to check it out. It is jaw-dropping awesome. Season 1 just wrapped up (13 episodes at around 50 minutes each), and all episodes are available via Netflix.

Synopsis:

Did you like 300? Wish there was a TV show that was like 300, but had more violence and sex? Spartacus: Blood and Sand is that TV show. Its even better than 300, in my opinion. Heck, one of the main guys in the show is from 300 - the messanger that gets kicked by Gerrard Butler into the well during the 'THIS IS SPARTA!' scene.

It is by far the most extreme TV show on air, bar none.

The TV series is not well-known in the US due to the fact that its being shown on the Starz network which is a premium cable channel. Unlike traditional TV, they are allowed to show more than any typical primetime show has ever had before. The show seeks to emulate the time period of ancient Rome by inserting so much nudity, you think your watching a porno.

The character development is fantastic. The group of no-name actors, sans Xena star Lucy Lawless do an incredible acting job on the show. I was totally devastated when they canned Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and this show has single handedly restored my faith in television.

Please note, you should be at least 18 years old, or better yet 21 to watch this.

Typical episodes include:

  • Full frontal nudity
  • Sex (usually 2-3 scenes, and include both gay and lesbian scenes)
  • Total dismemberment of any anotomical bodypart, even to the point of making parts of Hostel look family-friendly
  • Liberal usage of every foul word imaginable
  • Incredible plotlines
  • Characters you will cheer on, and others you enjoy watching being killed along with their families
  • Lucy Lawless

The story surrounds a Thracian man from a small town, setting off to war for Rome against the Gauls. Rome betrays Spartacus' hometown, leaving for other battles. He deserts the Roman Legion to save his wife before the barbarians can destroy the town and rape his wife. After the resolution of this (the end of episode 1), things take an unbelievable turn, forcing him into combat the colosseum in Capua, Italy.

If you've seen the awesomeness that is this new series (which has been renewed for a 2nd season, although it is postponed until the actor that plays Spartacus can recover from lukemia), please feel free to post here, and reccomend it to other VGCers.

One question...

Do you get to see Lucy Lawless nude?

She has sex with someone in almost every episode she's in.

*edit*

At least of the episodes I've seen. I'm up to like episode 5, and she's had sex in 3 of 4 of the episodes. She gets shot down in the 4th one, as far as I remember.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Well, just watched the first 20 minutes of the series. Not really working for me. The acting is not that great, and the dialog sucks. The opening saying this is to depict real like actions is laughable.

But, I will give it a few episodes and see if I like it. So far, True Blood and Dexter have more violence. Less sex however, and I do like sex :)

Eh. First 20 minutes are kind of slow, but it picks up...Trust me

The hot blond kept going from California valley girl to NZ accent. Was getting annoying. Then she dropped the fur coat and it made of for it.

Then again, if I want porn, I will watch porn. I will watch the first two episodes at some point, and let you know what I think. Right now however, I have to go to bed. :)

Spartacus is one word: Awesome

TheRealMafoo, first episode is just an intro. Everything picks up after that.

I hated the pilot, and didn't think much of ep 2 & 3. I think Spartacus' wife is one of the worst actresses I've ever seen. It really starts to pick up though and the finale is great. The over the top blood is reduced to more realistic amounts as the season continues.

OT: Prefer Rome personally, but it got very good towards the end. The finale is epic. And with such amazingly elegant lines such as

"The gods see fit to spread cheeks and ram cock up f*cking arse"

I can't wait for the next season.
