Forums - Sony - Never saw this, the CELL can improve graphics after all

I was impressed when I saw this today in gametrailers. They are using 6 spe's of the cell, (3 ps3's because they are using 2 spe's of each one ps3 has 8, and 7 usable) and they are rendering a full car.

 Wihtout using the GRAPHICS CARD.

Thats good cause the cell has been hurting their graphics for a long time now by making it overly complicated to program. Its about time its good for something

I heard a roumer over at GT that square enix is the first too accomplish some sort of graphics card enhancer(something like that) effect with 2 spe's of the cell. We will see how FF XIII looks in game.

 Only multi-plat developers think so, if it's the main platform of creation you end up with games that look like Uncharted and Ratchet and clank (oooomg uncharted XD ) 

Umm I heard that the Cell can actually build the models before the GPU has to process them :P or something of that kind of mumbo-jumbo ( I don't speak 1337 :/ ) But yeah, the Cell is VERY usefull when used correctly.

 Ahhhh I see that your statements 1 and 2 are opinions :) Glad to know they've replaced facts ^_^; 

 

1.) Isn't the movie industry currently bigger than the Video game?

2.) I loves me some graphics :P Apparently so do many people ^_^ but hey! I could be wrong :)

 apart from the fact that thery're using 3 ps3 it's impressive indeed

You're never gonna render graphics with the CPU anymore, so it's pretty pointless.

They aren't using 2 SPEs from each PS3, they're using all available SPEs from all three PS3s.  When he puts the light/dark filter over the image, you can see how the rendering workload is broken up.  Cell has 8 SPEs, 7 of them are working in a PS3, and one is reserved for I/O, so 6 are available to programmers.  One is used for image compression to send data over the network, the other 5 are used for raytracing.  On the client, one of those 5 is used to decompress the compressed images sent from the other PS3s, so in total, 14 SPEs are doing raytracing to produce a 720p image with 4x supersampling.
