Forums - Sales - NA Analysis: DS Vs PSP software sales

It's difficult to call it a fight.

As we've outlined previously, we also expect Sony to announce a successor to its PSP handheld, probably within the next six months, with the launch at the end of 2010 or early 2011.

If things play out as we currently expect, then the two companies are again on a course for what many will view as a head-to-head competition. (For our current feelings about Sony's position, please see last month's article.)

Just looking at the American market, we admit to being somewhat baffled by Nintendo's motives. While the Nintendo DS platform has shown a very slight weakness, it is still crushing its competition and outselling its competitor, the PSP, by a tremendous margin.

It has also demonstrated over the past five years that consumers are content with the graphical and sonic fidelity of Nintendo DS software.

Consider the comparison below of software dollar sales in the U.S. handheld segment during March 2010, showing that Nintendo DS software outsold PSP software by an 8-to-1 ratio.

I was expecting the PSP to have less than 11% - I don't even see the games in shops anymore

alfredofroylan, the pictures in your posts are always funny :)

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

PSP unfortunately was an underutilized system.

Great system, but hampered by lack of originality. The market soon learned you could pick up any of its games on the PS2, except with better graphical and control quality, and sometimes (esp in the earlier days) more features.

Shame. At least MGS Peace Walker is my personal most anticipated handheld release...nothing coming out for the DS really screams killer app to me (DQ9 is debatable; im not a fan of RPGs).

But hell, even if you look @ my software selection, its clearly in the favor of the DS.

Sony had a really great first go though....30% of the handheld market it more than any other handheld competitor has ever got out of Nintendo....even though PSP launched when the PS brand was its strongest.

Its a great handheld still....one can do so much with it.

I think the iPhone is also eating into its sales, but not to a large margin yet. There is no way to truly guauge how it is impacting the PSP, but when the PSP is up against the iphone and the DS, its a real uphill battle.

Sony should do a price drop, hardware sales are decent but could be alot better.

My feelings aswell...it's still retailing for the same price as it has been for the past, correct me if im wrong, 2 and a half years....It needs a price cute or should I say needed one. This late in the game I dunno how much a price cut will boost the system in the long run.

There is still life and potential in the system but it's never gonna recover in NA or others =/ ...japan however is another entirely different story I can see alot of japanese psp games making it over to the states and others and having an over abundence of japancentric games...good thing as a psp owner I happen to like japanese games haha.
